The Jetta continued in production through 2005 models manufactured until the end of October 2004 (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door). A redesigned 2005 Jetta was introduced in March 2005 as a midsize car. The Golf redesign will be delayed until late in the 2006 model year.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of a late 1999 model Jetta in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier. Note: Immediately after the test, there was a small fire at the base of the B-pillar. The pyrotechnic device in the belt tensioner had ignited sound insulation material. Soon after this incident, the manufacturer recalled all 1999 Jetta/Golf models to fix this problem, so it doesn't affect the crashworthiness evaluation.
Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar. Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was low. 1999 Volkswagen New Jetta GLS 4-door 2932 front seat-mounted torso airbags 99 172 68 2.0 L 4-cylinder 22 28

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

More horsepower emphasizes the jet in the Jetta.
By John Matras, NewCarTestDrive.com

The Jetta offers classy, functional accommodations, sharp handling, and excellent brakes. There's a choice of engines, all good choices depending on your lifestyle, budget, and view of the world.

The 2.0-liter keeps monthly payments down. The TDI diesel offers amazing fuel economy. The 1.8T delivers spirited performance for the enthusiast willing to shift manually. And the VR6 provides smooth, linear performance that makes the Jetta feel like an expensive German sports sedan.

Overview:

The Volkswagen Jetta is the best-selling European import on the U.S. market. It's available in any guise. There's a low-cost sedan, a frugal diesel, a sports sedan, and a sport wagon.

If you want a sports sedan, there's the Jetta GLS 1.8T and the new Jetta GLI. Power is up for both the 1.8T and the VR6. Volkswagen retuned the 1.8-liter turbocharged engine to produce 180 horsepower. The mid-year return of the Jetta GLI model includes a big power boost for the 2.8-liter VR6 engine, which jumps to 200 horsepower.
