The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides 3 different ratings - full-width frontal crash test , side impact crash test , and rollover resistance . The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Toyota Camry was redesigned for the 2002 model year.
Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar and roof rail. Measures taken from the head, neck, chest, and left leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible. Head accelerations from the B-pillar and roof rail hits were low. 2002 Toyota Camry XLE 4-door 3276 front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags 107 189 71 2.4 L 4-cylinder 23 32

Rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries would also be possible. In addition, loading to the shoulder was excessive. Measures taken from the dummy indicate that rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries would be likely in a crash of this severity. The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low. The dummy's head was hit by the pillar behind the rear passenger door and the window sill of the rear door. This pillar is required by federal standard to provide some protection for occupants' heads. The impact with the window sill did not produce high head injury measures, but the head protection is inadequate. 2004 Toyota Camry LE 4-door
The Toyota Camry was redesigned for the 2002 model year. Beginning with 2004 models, side structural changes were made to improve occupant protection in side-impact crashes. (Toyota reported that the structural changes would not significantly affect side-impact performance in models without side airbags; therefore the overall side impact rating for 2002-05 models without side airbags is the same.)

Two tests of the Camry were conducted, one with optional side airbags for the driver and rear passenger, and one without. These vehicles are rated separately, except that the structural ratings for both vehicles are based on both tests.
The dummy's head was hit by the intruding barrier, producing high head injury measures.

Engine Occasional problems on this vehicle are failures of the Air Fuel Ratio Sensors, Evaporative (EVAP) Emission system and the Engine. Failure of Air Fuel Ratio Sensors and EVAP system will cause the Check Engine Light to illuminate. The common failure of the Engine is excessive oil usage caused by engine oil gelling. However, when proper maintenance schedules for oil changes are followed, oil gelling should not occur. Lexus has issued an 8 year unlimited mileage goodwill repair for this condition. The cost to repair the Air Fuel Ratio Sensors is estimated at $377.31 each for parts and $65.00 for labor. The cost for parts to repair the EVAP system can range from $88.00 - $350.00 while labor can range from $19.50 - $65.00. The cost to repair the Engine is estimated at $4,500.00 for parts and $1,514.50 for labor. New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

America's most popular car gets a major makeover.
By John Rettie, NewCarTestDrive.com

Toyota admits that the Camry is a car that nobody aspires to own but it's one that everyone recommends others to buy. It's what's known as a safe buy. Toyota has tried hard to make the new Camry more exciting while at the same time make sure it is still a car that will get its occupants from A to B and back without any drama or worries about reliability year in and year out.

The 2002 Toyota Camry is still not as exciting as the 2002 Volkswagen Passat or the 2002 Nissan Altima, both of which are new designs. If looks and character don't matter much, the new Camry should prove to be a great car. It's one we would have no hesitation in recommending to people who just want a solid, reliable car, something that offers a good ride, decent performance and comfort, and blends in nicely with the crowd. That's just what many buyers are after and the Camry fits the bill very nicely, thank you. It will likely continue to be America's most popular new car.

Overview:

The Toyota Camry has been America's best-selling car for past few years. That's an important title for auto manufacturers, so Toyota is quite pleased that the Camry has outsold the Honda Accord and Ford Taurus, its arch-rivals among mid-size sedans. Now comes a completely redesigned Camry for 2002, making this the fifth generation.

This year's Camry is a slightly larger car. Yet performance and fuel economy have been maintained. Styling is all new, designed to add sensuality to what has been a bland design.

Better yet, prices have dropped slightly over last year's models. Given Toyota's reputation for quality, durability and reliability, the new Camry will once again prove to be the ideal car for about 400,000 new-car buyers a year who don't want to worry or even think about their car.
