The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Pontiac Trans Sport (renamed Montana in 1999), the Chevrolet Venture, and the Oldsmobile Silhouette were redesigned for the 1997 model year. The Silhouette was dropped after the 2004 model year, and a limited number of Pontiac Montanas and Chevrolet Ventures were manufactured for the 2005 model year.
Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. After moving forward into the airbag, the dummy's head and neck were snapped rearward as the steering wheel intruded. Then the dummy's head was hit from behind by the seatback and head restraint as they tilted forward because of floor buckling. The seat continued moving forward and pushed down on top of the dummy's head, bending its neck back even farther. Measures taken from the chest indicate low risk of injuries to this body region in a crash of this severity. Forces on the neck indicate that injuries to the neck would be likely. Forces on both tibias indicate that injuries to the lower legs would be likely. The forces on the left lower leg were so high that the dummy's metal foot broke off from its leg at the ankle. 1997 Pontiac Trans Sport SE 3783 none 112 187 73 3.4 L V6 18 25

Important: The following recalls were issued for the 2002 OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 2002 OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: 08-09-2002
Units potentially affected: 133,221
NHTSA campaign number: 02V222000
Defective part or component: INTERIOR SYSTEMS:PASSENGER RESTRAINTS:AIR BAG:FRONTAL
Description: Certain passenger, mini vans, and sport utility vehicles have an air bag inflator on the driver's side that could fracture at a weld during a deployment. Pieces of the inflator could strike and injure vehicle occupants and the air bag cushion would not inflate fully, reducing the capability of the bag to protect the driver. Dealers will inspect, and replace, if necessary, the air bag module assembly on the driver's side. Owner notification began August 15, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Buick at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, GMC at 1-800-462-8782, Oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537, or Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 717,302
NHTSA campaign number: 04V597000
Defective part or component: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
Description: On certain minivans equipped with second-row bucket seats or captains chairs and a power sliding door on the passenger side of the vehicle, a passenger using the interior handle to open the power sliding door could be injured. If a passenger uses the interior handle to open the power sliding door and holds onto the handle while it is being opened by the motor, the passengers arm may be pushed into the seat back or armrest and a wrist or lower arm injury may result. Dealers will replace the power sliding door interior handle on the passenger-side. If the vehicle is equipped with a power or manual sliding door on the driver-side, the interior handle will also be replaced for appearance reasons. Note: before the vehicle is serviced, GM advises owners to not use the interior door handle to open the door. The driver can open and close the door from switches at the drivers position or by using the remote key fob. The driver should tell passengers to use the switch located in front of the door to open or close it. The driver should use the override switch to prevent operation of the power door by children or by others who are not familiar with its use. The recall is expected to begin in March 2005. Owners should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438; Pontiac at 1-800-620-7668; or Oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537.

New Car Test Drive Review

Summary:

All-wheel drive adds appeal to luxurious people hauler.
By Phil Berg, NewCarTestDrive.com

The Oldsmobile Silhouette makes all occupants feel they have control over their personal space, with places for drinks and trinkets, and individual entertainment options. You could live in one of these if you had to, and it sometimes seems that way when you're stuck on the 405 in Los Angeles, shuttling distractible youths to after-school Tai Chi lessons.

We've driven minivans with aftermarket video and television setups, and none of them match the sound quality, picture quality, and ease of operation found in the Premiere Edition. On the other hand, the GLS model offers most of the same equipment without the video system for considerably less. Viewed that way, the video system is an expensive option. Some users, however, say it's money well spent because it eliminates from their vocabulary the phrase, "Don't make me come back there."

Regardless, the Silhouette is fun to drive. It rides and handles well. Add all-wheel drive and it's a great all-weather vehicle.

If you're shopping for the absolute lowest-priced transport for the soccer team, you should probably look elsewhere. The Silhouette is designed for people who understand that interior space, efficiency, and versatility are desirable traits in a luxury vehicle. These are certainly traits we can understand.

Overview:

The Oldsmobile Silhouette is a luxurious minivan loaded with features. It comes standard with a powerful V6 engine. The Silhouette is so refined and handles so well that it is actually fun to hustle down a challenging road. Yet with its long wheelbase, it seats seven comfortably and comes with thoughtful and entertaining interior features that make trips with kids go easier.

Safety has been improved with new dual-stage air bags for the driver and front-seat passenger designed to detect the acceleration and severity of a crash and inflate the air bag appropriately to minimize risk of injure to those of smaller stature. Front side-impact air bags are standard.

All-wheel drive is available this year for the Silhouette, improving vehicle stability and driver control on slippery surfaces. The optional Versatrak all-wheel-drive system is packaged with four-wheel disc brakes and an independent rear suspension, all of which adds increases stability in all driving situations and weather conditions.

Also new for 2002 is a third-generation entertainment system, which features a DVD player with wireless remote. And more seating options this year let buyers choose the interior layout that best suits their needs.
