The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

The Chevrolet TrailBlazer was introduced in the 2002 model year as a larger, heavier replacement for the Blazer, which remained in production through the 2004 model year. Similarly, the GMC Envoy and Oldsmobile Bravada were redesigned for 2002, replacing entirely their earlier, smaller versions.

Structural, seat belt, and frontal airbag changes were made beginning with 2005 models to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. Therefore, the frontal offset ratings for 2002-04 models do not carry over to 2005 and later models.

Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head extended part way out the open window and hit the B-pillar.
Measures taken from the neck and left leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the B-pillar, indicating that injuries to the head would be possible. Forces on the chest indicate that injuries to the chest would be possible. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be likely.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
Description:
On certain sport utility vehicles, a fuel filter fitting can become disconnected. If this were to occur while attempting to start the engine, a no-start condition would result and fuel would be pumped out the fuel filter onto the ground. If the fitting becomes disconnected while the vehicle is in motion, the engine would stop due to inadequate fuel supply and cause a loss of power steering assist. If an ignition source were present, fuel leakage from a disconnected fuel filter fitting could result in a fire. Dealers will replace the fuel filter quick connect retainers. Owner notification began September 20, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020. VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER
Description:
Certain sport utility vehicles have windshield wiper systems that will not turn on, cease operation while in use, fail to turn off/on by themselves (moisture sensitive wiper system), or have continuous windshield washer pump operation because the presence of water within the wiper modules can either cause a short circuit or can lead to the corrosion of components within the module. Depending on the occurrence and weather situation, driver visibility could be reduced, which could result in a crash. Dealers will cover the windshield wiper module vent hole with a patch. Also, the wiper motor, circuit board, and electrical connector will be inspected to signs of water intrusion and/or corrosion and be replaced as required. Owner notification is expected to begin during the third quarter of 2004. Owners should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438; Oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537; or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.

SEAT BELTS
Description:
Certain light duty pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 209, (seat belt assemblies). One of the two sensors in the drivers and front passengers seat belt retractors could be inoperative. The seat belt retractors will lock when the belt webbing is extracted during a crash; however, the mechanism that locks the seat belt retractor when the vehicle decelerates quickly, such as heavy braking, may not operate as intended. Nothing specified Dealers will inspect the seat belt assemblies to determine proper vehicle sensor function. Owner notification is expected to begin during July 2004. Owners should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, GMC at 1-866-996-9463, or Oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Description:
Some sport utility vehicles equipped with an electronically controlled air suspension (ECAS) have a condition in which the ECAS may produce a brief electrical spike while the vehicle is operating. This electrical spike can disrupt the powertrain control module (PCM) causing the vehicle to stall. If the spike damages the PCM, the vehicle may not restart. If this happens while the vehicle is moving, a crash could occur without prior warning. Dealers will install a wiring harness. EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS
Description:
On certain sport utility vehicles, vibration and heat may cause the tail lamp/stop lamp bulb to loosen in its socket. If this occurs, the bulb may flicker and eventually become inoperative. An inoperative brake lamp will not convey the drivers intention of stopping to drivers in following vehicles, and an inoperative rear turn signal lamp will not convey the driver's intention to turn to drivers in following vehicles. Both of these failures can increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect the tail lamp/stop lamp assemblies, and if necessary, replace them. The recall began on November 22, 2004. Owners should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, Oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537, Buick at 1-866-608-8080, or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.

New Car Test Drive Review
Summary:
Destined to be the final hurrah from America's oldest carmaker.
By Sam Moses, NewCarTestDrive.com
It's ironic that GM execs have said that the Bravada was intended "to make a strong statement about the division." The division is, or will soon be, dead. So maybe the statement is about nostalgia. But Oldsmobile can go out with its head held high, over the quality and state-of-the-art engineering of its final vehicle. |
Overview:
The Oldsmobile Bravada is the most luxurious of three new midsize SUVs from General Motors. As the Oldsmobile marketers like to say, if there's an Aurora in your garage, a Bravada would make a perfect stablemate. Two dinosaurs. Each may be technically innovative, handsome, and a truly fine vehicle (the Bravada is more than that), but that doesn't guarantee survival. Two days after the press introduction of the Bravada, GM announced that it would be putting Oldsmobile down, after a 103-year run. To assuage any concerns about service, Oldsmobile is, for a limited time, offering a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty on its new vehicles. Redesigned from the ground up, the Bravada is an engineering knockout. By its progressive design, this vehicle has already made GM history. Dinosaur indeed. The Bravada makes the Jeep Grand Cherokee look like the dinosaur.
