Rollover Resistance
|
|
The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

The Nissan Altima was redesigned for the 2002 model year.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the Altima in two 40 mph frontal offset crash tests into deformable barriers. In the first test, the airbag deployed late. This led Nissan to modify the airbag crash sensors on 2002 models produced after March 15, 2002 plus Nissan has initiated a service campaign to modify the sensors at its cost for the models produced earlier. The Institute tested a second Altima with the modified sensor, and the airbag inflated much earlier. Ratings of the Altima are based on the results of the second test, except structural performance is based on both tests.

Dummy movement was well controlled in the second test. The dummy rebounded into the seat without its head hitting any stiff structure that could cause injury. However, the driver's seat pitched forward slightly, tipped toward the door, and moved forward slightly on its inboard track, where the safety belt buckle is anchored.
In the second test, measures taken from the head, neck, chest, and right leg indicate low risk of injury to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the left tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible.

Measures taken from the dummy indicate that serious skull fracture and/or brain injuries and neck injuries would be likely in a crash of this severity. A fracture of the pelvis also would be likely. Rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries plus a left femur fracture would be possible.
Measures taken from the dummy indicate that serious neck injuries would be possible in a crash of this severity. The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low.
The dummy's head hit the window sill of the rear passenger door, producing moderately high neck injury measures. Hitting the window areas should be prevented.
2005 Nissan Altima 2.5 S 4-door

The Nissan Altima was redesigned for the 2002 model year. Beginning with 2005 models, door changes were made to improve occupant protection in side-impact crashes. (Nissan reported that these door changes would not significantly affect side-impact performance in models without side airbags; therefore, the overall side impact rating for 2002-05 models without side airbags is the same.)

When side airbags are optional, as in this vehicle, the Institute conducts the test without this option. If a manufacturer offering optional side airbags requests the Institute to conduct an additional test of a vehicle with this option and agrees to reimburse the cost of the vehicle, a second test is conducted. Nissan did not request such a test.

The dummy's head was hit by the intruding barrier, producing high head injury measures.

On certain vehicles equipped with the 2.5 liter engine, the exhaust pipe hanger pin may catch debris from the road that could be ignited by contact with the main catalyst. This condition could result in a fire. Dealers will remove the protruding portion of the exhaust pipe hanger pin. In addition to the corrective action, in order to reduce the risk of fire in the event of poor or improper maintenance that could result in oil spillage, heat shield(s) will be installed on the pre-catalyst and exhaust tube. Owner notification began on July 30, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES SOLD OR REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALASKA, COLORADO, CONNECTICUT, IOWA, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KANSAS, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, MONTANA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, SOUTH DAKOTA, UTAH, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. AT EXTREMELY COLD TEMPERATURES, MOISTURE IN THE FUEL TANK COULD FREEZE AND FORM ICE CRYSTALS. THESE ICE CRYSTALS MAY OBSTRUCT THE SUCTION OPENING OF THE FUEL PUMP. This can prevent the supply of fuel to the engine and cause the engine to stop, which could result in a crash without warning. Dealers will install a screen at the suction opening of the fuel pump to prevent ice crystals from blocking the opening. Owner notification is expected to begin during August 2003. Owners should contact Nissan at 1-800-333-0829.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
|
|
Description:
|
On certain passenger vehicles, the circuit board for the crank position sensor may have an improper solder joint due to solder deformation caused by heat stress accelerated by the existence of flux residue during the soldering process. This could cause the (service engine soon) warning light to come on, create a no start condition, cause reduced engine power, or cause the engine to stop running without warning during vehicle operation, which could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the crank position sensors. Vehicles involved in a previous recall campaign, 01v357, are also included in this new campaign. The replacement sensors used in that campaign are also affected. Owner notification is expected to begin during December 2003. Owners should contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or Infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.

Engine
|
Occasional problems on this vehicle are failures of the Crankshaft Position (CKP) and Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensors and screws falling out of the intake manifold Power Valve on the 2.5L engine. Failure of the CKP Sensor or the CMP Sensor may cause the engine to stall, and may cause the Check Engine Light to illuminate. When the intake manifold Power Valve screws fall out they enter the engine through the intake manifold and can damage the spark plugs causing the engine to misfire or may damage the engine block. The cost to replace the CKP Sensor is $17.30 for parts and $26.00 for labor. The cost to replace the CMP Sensor is $58.64 for parts and $39 for labor. The cost to remove the intake manifold and replace the Power Valve screws is estimated at %50.00 for parts and $195.00 for labor. The cost the replace the engine short block is estimated at $2650.00 for parts and $1,040.00 for labor. In some cases, problems with the Engine Sensors and intake manifold Power Valve screws may be covered by a factory recall. All prices are estimates based on $65.00 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax.

New Car Test Drive Review
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Summary:
|
Sporty alternative to the ubiquitous Camry and Accord.
By John Rettie, NewCarTestDrive.com
The 2002 Nissan's Altima is an impressive new midsize car. It's one of those somewhat rare family sedans that actually stands out in the crowd and delivers on the expectations set by its looks. Nissan's Maxima has long been a favorite with people who like a car with some pizzazz, but you'll have to spend well over $24,000 to get a Maxima with its standard V6. The Altima is available with a four-cylinder engine for considerably less money, and it's a roomier car. Ironically, if you want performance, the V6-powered Altima is probably a better bet than a Maxima because it's lighter and more responsive, and it costs less. For those who want something different from the ever-popular Accord and Camry, the 2002 Nissan Altima is an attractive alternative in more ways than one. |
|
Overview:
|
With its big V6 and sports suspension, the Nissan Altima has suddenly turned into a sporty alternative to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Completely redesigned for 2002, the Altima offers dramatic new styling. More important, it's bigger in every dimension. About the only thing the 2002 Altima shares with the previous model is its name. Prior to 2002, the Nissan Altima languished as a wallflower, though a very good one. The Altima was slightly smaller than the Accord and Camry, but bigger and more expensive than the highly popular Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. It was, as the saying goes, neither fish nor fowl. And it only came with a four-cylinder engine. Now everything has changed. This year marks the first time Altima has ever offered a V6 option. It's the same 3.5-liter engine that powers the 2002 Maxima, and it's one of the best V6 engines available today. Last year's Altima was smaller than the Camry and Accord, but the 2002 Altima is bigger than either of them. This means roomier seating for four people.
