The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

The Mitsubishi Montero Sport was introduced in the 1997 model year and structurally modified beginning with 2001 models to improve occupant protection in frontal offset crashes.

Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. The driver's seat tipped toward the B-pillar and during rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail, B-pillar, and grab handle for the left rear door.
Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia and right foot indicate that injuries to the lower leg and foot would be possible. Head accelerations from the roof rail, B-pillar, and grab handle hits were negligible.

New Car Test Drive Review
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Summary:
|
All-wheel drive increases stability on slippery roads.
By Phil Berg, NewCarTestDrive.com
Mitsubishi's Montero Sport is a stylish package with real off-road capability. Its new all-wheel-drive system gives it improved stability on the road, particularly when it is slippery. The Montero Sport is priced below the larger, more-popular Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee, while offering similar performance. |
|
Overview:
|
The Mitsubishi Montero Sport boasts rough and ready looks backed up by truck-tough underpinnings and a part-time four-wheel-drive system for serious off-road use. It's tough enough to tackle rugged terrain, yet stylish enough for a night out on the town. For 2002, Mitsubishi adds a full-time four-wheel-drive mode designed to improve traction in slippery or inconsistent conditions, such as snow, ice, gravel, dirt, or rain-slick roads. This all-wheel-drive system enhances the safety of the Montero Sport when bad weather hits civilization. The Montero Sport continues to offer more cargo space than a Nissan Pathfinder or Isuzu Rodeo. You can dress it up or dress it down, with optional leather and an available 3.5-liter V6 that delivers gutsy performance.
