Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Hyundai Santa Fe was introduced in the 2001 model year. All 2001 Santa Fe models manufactured after March 2, 2001 include a modified accelerator pedal intended to reduce right leg injury risk in frontal offset crashes. Beginning with 2002 models manufacturered after March 2002, they were equipped with standard side airbags for drivers' and front passengers' heads and chests (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door).

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of a Santa Fe with the modified accelerator pedal in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier. The vehicle was retrofitted with the modified accelerator pedal before the crash test.

A redesigned, larger Santa Fe will be introduced in the spring of 2006.
Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar. Measures taken from the neck, chest, and left leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the B-pillar, indicating that injuries to the head would be possible. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible. 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS 3836 none 103 177 72 2.7 L V6 19 23

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

Economy with style.
By Tom Lankard, NewCarTestDrive.com

Hyundai's first sport-utility vehicle looks good. It's fun to drive, particularly with a V6 and front-wheel drive. The optional four-wheel-drive system improves traction in slippery conditions, but places a burden on the V6 engine.

Overall, the new Hyundai Santa Fe is worth a look if you are already considering the Ford Escape, Mazda Tribute, Honda CR-V, Suzuki Grand Vitara or Toyota RAV4.

Overview:

Hyundai sure has changed. Today, Hyundai produces the eye-popping Tiburon sportster, the elegantly handsome XG350 and, not least, one of the curviest compact SUVs on the market, the Santa Fe.

The Santa Fe has what Hyundai Motor America's president calls a very high gawk factor. We think it's a good description. A year after its introduction, the Santa Fe never fails to draw our attention. But rather than gawk, we drove. And we liked how the Santa Fe drove, both on and off paved roads.

For 2002, Hyundai has beefed up Santa Fe's standard-equipment list.
