|
The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute were introduced in the 2001 model year.

Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar.
Measures taken from the chest indicate low risk of injuries to this body region. High head accelerations occurred when the dummy's head hit both the steering wheel through the airbag and the B-pillar, indicating that head injuries would be possible. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be likely. (Note: during the test, some injury data from the left leg was lost, but after the Institute reviewed comparable test data from Ford and Mazda, the left leg injury risk was rated good.)

Measures taken from the dummy indicate that rib fractures would be possible in a crash of this severity. The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low.
Measures taken from the dummies in the two tests of the 2003 model, taken together, indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.
In both tests of the 2003 model, the dummy's head was hit by the pillar behind the rear passenger door. This pillar is required by federal standard to provide some protection for occupants' heads.
2003 Ford Escape XLT 4wd

The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute were introduced in the 2001 model year.

Two tests of a 2003 Escape were conducted, one with an optional side airbag for the driver, and one without. A third test of an Escape, a 2005 model, was conducted because the side airbags were changed beginning with 2005 models to include protection for the rear passenger. These vehicles are rated separately, except that the injury and head protection ratings for the rear passenger are based on both tests of the 2003 models. Structural ratings for the three vehicles are based on all three tests.

The dummy's head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side airbag that deployed from the seat.

Description:

On certain sport utility vehicles built with 3.0 liter V6 engines, the accelerator cable may prevent the throttle from returning to the idle position. An unexpected increase in engine idle speed may increase stopping distance and may result in a vehicle crash. Dealers will replace the accelerator cable. The recall is expected to begin on January 17, 2005. Owners should contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Certain 2004-2005 sport utility vehicles and certain 2001-2003 sport utiity vehicle having rear liftgate components serviced with 2004 equivalent components fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 206, door locks and door retention components. The rear liftgate latching system does not meet the inertia load requirement in one direction. If the liftgate is left unlocked, there is the potential that it may open during a crash. Dealers will replace the rear liftgate latch release rod, the release rod attachment clip and the door handle return spring. The recall is expected to begin on January 24, 2005. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
|
|
Description:
|
On certain sport utility vehicles equipped with antilock brakes (ABS), the ABS module connector may have missing or dislodged wire seals. This condition could allow contamination to enter the module connector, creating a potential for an electrical short. An electrical short might cause an ABS malfunction that would illuminate the ABS warning light, and in some cases, the module may overheat resulting in burning odor, smoke, and/or fire. This condition could occur either when the vehicle ignition switch is in the off position or while the vehicle is being operated. Dealers will inspect the wire harness connector to the ABS module for missing or dislodged wire seals, and repair or replace the harness connector as appropriate. The dealer will also inspect the connector on the ABS module and replace it if it is found to be corroded or damaged. The recall is expected to begin on or about April 23, 2007. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

New Car Test Drive Review
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Summary:
|
Best-in-class handling and performance.
By Mitch McCullough, Editor-in-Chief, NewCarTestDrive.com
With the V6 engine, which is standard in the XLT version for 2002 and an option in the XLS, the Ford Escape offers the most power in its category. A four-wheel independent suspension and unitbody construction make it handle almost as well as a car. A car-like ride makes it easy to live with. Overall, we feel the Escape is the best SUV in its class. |
|
Overview:
|
Ford Escape offers agile handling on both paved and unpaved roads. It rides smoothly and gets strong acceleration performance from an optional V6 engine. The Escape seats four people comfortably, and folding down the rear seats reveals a flat, moderately sized cargo area. Best of all, its price is relatively low. A completely new vehicle a year ago, the Ford Escape is among the best small sport-utilities vehicle on sale today, especially if you spend little time off road.
