The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides 3 different ratings - full-width frontal crash test , side impact crash test , and rollover resistance . The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Frontal Offset Crash Test Rating: 4 star legend
Overall Evaluation A
Structure/Safety Cage A
Injury Measures
Head/Neck G
Chest G
Leg/foot, left P
Leg/foot, right G
Restraints/dummy kinematics M
Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Dodge Durango was introduced in the 1998 model year.
Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. As the dummy moved into the airbag, its torso went under and to the left of the bag. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar. There was far too much upward movement of the steering wheel. Measures taken from the head, neck, chest, and right leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the left tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be likely. Forces on the foot were high enough to damage the dummy's steel "foot bone," indicating that injuries to the left foot would be likely. Forces on the left femur indicate that injuries to the upper leg would be possible. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was low. 1999 Dodge Durango SLT Plus 4844 none 116 194 72 5.2 L V8 13 17

Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 320,188
NHTSA campaign number: 04V216000
Defective part or component: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER
Description: On certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, the windshield wiper module motor may be susceptible to water intrusion that could cause internal corrosion and result in partial or complete loss of front windshield wiping capability. Driver visibility could be reduced, which could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the front windshield wiper module. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule for this campaign. Owners should contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
Recall date: 12-21-2004
Units potentially affected: 592,707
NHTSA campaign number: 04V596000
Defective part or component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:UPPER BALL JOINT
Description: On certain sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks equipped with four-wheel drive (4x4), if moisture leaks into the front suspension upper ball joint, evacuation of the lubricant and corrosion of the joint may cause the joint to wear over an extended period of time. This could cause a clunking noise in the front suspension, which may not always be heard by the vehicle occupants. Excessive wear in the upper ball joint may allow it to separate, which could result in loss of control of the vehicle. Dealers will replace the front suspension upper ball joints. This safety improvement campaign began on December 21, 2004. Owners can contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
Recall date: 10-30-2006
Units potentially affected: 35,103
NHTSA campaign number: 06V339000
Defective part or component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Description: On certain sport utility vehicles equipped with front bench seats only, if fluid is spilled from the floor mounted cup holder, an unused console power outlet connector located under the seat may become contaminated. This may allow development of a high resistive short circuit in the connector, which could eventually lead to a fire. Dealers will inspect the console wiring connector for corrosion, clean as required, and install a cap to prevent additional fluid from contaminating the connector free of charge. The recall began on October 30, 2006. Owners may contact daimler Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

Not too big, not too small, and very rugged.
By Mitch McCullough, Editor-in-Chief, NewCarTestDrive.com

Dodge Durango is practical, intelligently designed and easy to operate. It offers more room and better acceleration than the mid-size SUVs. It also compares favorably to the full-size Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, and GMC Yukon.

The Durango cuts a distinctive appearance among sport-utility vehicles. It's a good choice for people who want to step out from the crowd.

Overview:

Dodge Durango is handsome, powerful, versatile, and refined. For many buyers, however, Durango's most appealing feature is its just-right size. Based on the Dakota pickup, Durango is smaller and more maneuverable than the full-size SUVs, such as the Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Tahoe. Yet Durango still offers six-passenger seating, V8 power, and a hefty towing capacity. Dodge Durango has found a comfortable niche that Ford and GM missed.

With theater-style seating that gives rear-seat passengers a view of the road ahead, and other interior creature comforts, the Durango is a smart choice for large families. It's also a good choice for people who tow light to medium-sized trailers. A beefy 5.9-liter V8 is available, and it delivers plenty of pulling power, while the more sophisticated 4.7-liter overhead-cam V8 offers decent performance and an added measure of refinement.

A new five-speed automatic transmission is available for 2002 that should improve fuel economy.

Also new for 2002 are optional side-curtain air bags ($495), available for every trim level. For 2002, Dodge has added a high-value trim level called SXT with unique Graphite trim. Last year, Durango benefited from an all-new, more comfortable and more car-like interior, plus a new performance-tuned R/T model.
