The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

The Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country were redesigned for the 2001 model year.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the Grand Caravan in three 40 mph frontal offset crash tests into deformable barriers. After the first test, DaimlerChrysler indicated the results were different from tests the company had conducted and requested a retest.

Results of the second test were more consistent with company test results for structural performance, but the amount and pattern of intrusion were similar. More significantly, a fuel leak occurred, revealing a weakness in the design of a circular fitting where the fuel lines exit the fuel tank. Further examination of the fitting in the van tested first showed stress fractures in the same area as the leak in the second van.

A third test was conducted after DaimlerChrysler made a design change to fix the fuel tank fitting and retrofitted a 2001 model with the redesign (all 2002 and later models include the modification). Examination of the redesigned fitting after the third test indicated no damage.

Dummy movement was well controlled in all three tests, except there was too much upward steering wheel movement in the second test.
Measures taken from the neck and chest in all three tests indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag in the first and second tests, indicating that injuries to the head would be possible. Forces on the left tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible in the first and third tests. Forces on the right tibia and foot indicate that injuries to the lower leg and foot would be likely in all three tests.

New Car Test Drive Review
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Summary:
|
A luxury car disguised as a minivan.
By Mitch McCullough, Editor-in-Chief, NewCarTestDrive.com
The Chrysler Town & Country is among the best minivans available. Chrysler wrote the book on minivans and the Chrysler Group has sold more than 9 million minivans since 1983; it continues to dominate the market, outselling GM and Ford by a two-to-one margin, and outselling Honda by nearly four-to-one.This new Town & Country shows why. It's roomy, comfortable, practical, powerful and nimble. Order the Limited model and add the word luxurious to that list. |
|
Overview:
|
If what you really want is a luxury car, but family demands call for a minivan, then you've come to the right place. With comfortable seating (available in leather, of course) for up to seven people, power everything, a responsive engine, and a smooth ride, the Chrysler Town & Country makes you feel like you're driving an refined, upscale vehicle. Yet it offers practicality without the excessive weight and bulk of a sport-utility vehicle. Getting in and out is easy with a low, flat floor and chair-height seating, and you don't need to be a Houdini to climb into the third row. It even fits in the garage. Chrysler completely redesigned the Town & Country for 2001. The result ranks among the best minivans on the market. The interior is versatile with seats that fold and remove. Powerful V6 engines deliver crisp performance. The ride is smooth and quiet. And it's wrapped in an attractive design. New features available for 2002 include adjustable pedals, DVD video and remote audio for the rear seats complete with wireless headphones, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.
