<p>The Volvo S80 was introduced in the 1999 model year and modified beginning with 2000 models to include structural changes to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. Beginning with 2001 models, the frontal airbags also were improved to include dual-stage inflators that permit low energy deployments in low severity crashes, sensors that reduce the likelihood of deployment in minor fender-benders, and vent holes positioned better to direct hot gasses away from a driver's hands.</p>
<p>The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the Volvo S80, based primarily on performance of a 2000 model in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier. The performance of 2001 and later models is rated separately from 2000s because the airbag modifications are expected to reduce or eliminate problems in restraint system performance observed in the 2000 model. Otherwise, performance of 2000 and later models should be very similar.</p>
Dummy movement was well controlled. After the dummy moved forward into the airbag, it rebounded into the seat and then its head hit the B-pillar.
Measures taken from the head, neck, chest, and both legs indicate low risk of injury to these body regions. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was low.

Vehicle Description: Sedans and wagons. The rear outboard seat belt anchorage bolts may have been incorrectly tightened. In the event of a crash, the seat occupant may not be properly restrained, increasing the risk of injury. Dealers will inspect the anchorage bolts and tighten to the correct torque level. Owner notification began May 7, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Volvo at 1-800-458-1552.

On certain passenger and sport utility vehicles, under certain operating conditions, some electric cooling fans may overheat potentially causing heat damage and, in rare instances, a fire in the engine compartment. Description:

On certain passenger vehicles, a combination of throttle positioning sensor irregularities, a dirty throttle housing, and/or inefficient software calibration may cause a warning lamp to light and the subsequent onset of limp home modes. This resulted in a high number of vehicles going into the limp home mode without need. Dealers will install the current software upgrade onto the involved vehicles. Volvo's S80 is luxurious, roomy and safe. Its styling is representative of the new direction Volvo has taken away from the boxy designs of the past. Silky-smooth power is available from a pair of highly evolved six-cylinder engines, along with a choice of sophisticated stability and traction control systems. Ride quality is emphasized over handling to reduce road vibration. The twin-turbocharged engine on the T6 is much more powerful than the standard 2.9. Volvo's interior ergonomics are excellent with handsome switchgear and comfortable leather seats.
