The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides 3 different ratings - full-width frontal crash test , side impact crash test , and rollover resistance . The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Toyota 4Runner was redesigned for the 1996 model year.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the 4Runner in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier.

Note: Airbag and safety belt changes beginning with 1998 and 1999 models improved the 4Runner's performance in the federal government's full-width crash test at 35 mph, which evaluates other important aspects of frontal crashworthiness. These changes are not expected to affect the results of the Institute's test, because measures indicate that significant injury to the upper body was unlikely in the tested 1996 model (these measures are most likely to be affected by airbag and safety belt changes).
Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. After the dummy moved forward into the airbag, it rebounded into the seat without its head coming close to any stiff structure that could cause injury. However, there was far too much upward movement of the steering wheel. Measures taken from the head, neck, chest, and left leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible. 1996 Toyota 4Runner SR5 3942 none 105 179 67 3.4 L V6 17 19

New Car Test Drive Review

Summary:

Not afraid to go off road.
By Mitch McCullough, Editor-in-Chief, NewCarTestDrive.com

If you don't require the brute towing power of a V8, you'll have trouble finding a better mid-size sport-utility vehicle than the 4Runner. It's a textbook example of insightful, thoughtful, comprehensive care in design and engineering. Everything about it is correctly done. On the critical issues of reliability and durability, the 4Runner and Toyota's reputation are a tough combination to beat. Plus, it's an extremely capable off-roader.

Overview:

The Toyota 4Runner represents one of the tougher trucks in Toyota's lineup. While the newly redesigned RAV4 and the all-new Highlander are car-based SUVs, the 4Runner, like the Land Cruiser, provides the two-speed transfer case and suspension travel needed for serious off-road driving. The 4Runner has all of the sturdy stuff you need to venture beyond civilized roads.

It can also be fitted with leather upholstery, automatic climate control, and other luxury features.

Overall, the 4Runner is easy to drive, gives a comfortable highway ride, secure handling, and provides lots of storage room. The standard V6 engine and four-speed automatic transmission delivers snappy acceleration performance.

Traction control for rear-wheel drive models, anti-lock brakes, and stability control are all standard features for 2001.
