The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides 3 different ratings - full-width frontal crash test , side impact crash test , and rollover resistance . The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Head/Neck A
Chest G
Leg/foot, left G

Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Pontiac Grand Am was redesigned for the 1999 model year and the Oldsmobile Alero was introduced in the 1999 model year. Note: 2005 model Grand Am sedans were sold as new cars only to fleets and were discontinued altogether after the 2005 model year. The Alero was discontinued after the 2004 model year.
Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. During rebound, the dummy moved toward the driver door, which had bowed outward, and its head hit the window sill. Then the head moved up and back and hit the B-pillar. Plus there was too much upward movement of the steering wheel. Measures taken from the neck and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the B-pillar, indicating that injuries to the head would be possible. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible. Head acceleration from the window sill hit was low. 1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE 4-door 3080 none 107 186 70 2.4 L 4-cylinder 22 30

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

Performance, style, and value.
By Jim McCraw, NewCarTestDrive.com

Given its sophistication and features balanced against its attractive price, the Alero is clearly Oldsmobile's best attempt yet at making a small car to compete with the benchmark cars from Japan. A new 5-speed manual gearbox should add to the sports appeal of the GL models. As a solid entry-level choice that no longer feels like a cheap rental unit, the Alero is quite appealing and should not be overlooked. But buy one soon, as Oldsmobile's days are numbered.

Overview:

The Alero is one of Oldsmobile's better efforts. Available in a choice of sedan or coupe body styles, the Alero offers a decent mix of performance and style for a good price. It delivers good mid-range power, a smooth-shifting transmission and positive steering feedback, as well as a roomy back seat, an attractive interior and a sizeable trunk.

Alero, Aurora, and Intrigue are some of the better domestic designs, so it's a shame to see Oldsmobile go from that standpoint. Buying a 2001 model shouldn't cause worry, however, as GM will be there to stand behind these cars and honor all warranty claims and maintenance needs.
