The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides 3 different ratings - full-width frontal crash test , side impact crash test , and rollover resistance . The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Overall Evaluation M
Structure/Safety Cage M
Injury Measures
Head/Neck G
Chest G
Leg/foot, left M
Leg/foot, right A
Restraints/dummy kinematics M
Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Nissan Altima was redesigned for the 1998 model year and modified beginning with 2000 models to change airbag characteristics.
Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. During rebound, the dummy moved toward the driver door, which had bowed outward, and its head approached but did not hit the window sill. Then the head moved up and back and hit the B-pillar. Plus there was too much upward movement of the steering wheel. Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the left knee indicate that injuries to the knee would be possible. Forces on the right tibia inidcate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible. The dummy's left shin hit a metal plate under the knee bolster, which gashed the vinyl "skin" near the knee. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was low. 2000 Nissan Altima GXE 4-door 3025 none 103 186 69 2.4 L 4-cylinder 21 28

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

The mid-size David, somewhat more Goliath than before.
By Phil Berg, NewCarTestDrive.com

The slightly larger Altima is still a sweet package, a high-quality sedan that's still trimmer in size compared to the larger and more popular Camry and Accord (not to mention Ford's Taurus). If you like trim, maneuverable sedans, Altima is still a great buy.

Overview:

Since its 1993 introduction, Altima's strength has been its slightly smaller size, lower price, and more nimble handling than the mid-range, mid-size Nissan Maxima, Toyota Camry, or Honda Accord. Faster, roomier, and more sophisticated than a compact, Altima has offered a real, between-floors alternative that some people find just right.

That's why we were a little surprised when Nissan redesigned the Altima last year, making it longer and more powerful than before. But we needn't have worried, because neither the extra inches nor the increased horsepower diminished the Altima's unique charm. In fact, the newest Altima is sleeker-looking and quieter, yet even more responsive than before.

For 2001, Nissan has focused on making Altima an even better value, with a new Limited Edition option package for the already value-oriented Altima GXE.
