The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

BRAKES:HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:BOOSTER
Description:
Vehicle Description: Sport utility vehicles. The accumulator that is installed on the hydraulic brake booster may have been improperly manufactured. Over a period of time, this could result in leakage of the pressurized nitrogen gas from inside the accumulator. The loss of this gas pressure could result in an abnormal noise from the left side of the dash panel when the brakes are applied, and possibly a delayed first time brake boost assist after the vehicle has been parked for a period of time, which could result in a vehicle crash. Dealers will install an improved accumulator. Owner notification mailing began October 1, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Mitsubishi at 1-800-222-0037.

EQUIPMENT:OTHER:OWNERS/SERVICE/OTHER MANUAL
Description:
Certain sport utility and passenger vehicles fail to comply with federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 225, ""child restraint anchorage systems."" the owner's manual does not contain a step-by-step description for headrest adjustment when installing a child restraint system (crs) tether strap. If the tether strap is improperly installed to the tether anchor, the child safety seat may not be sufficient restrained. In the event of a crash, the child could be injured. A letter outlining the problem will be sent to owners along with a sticker containing the correct instructions as well as instructions on where to affix the sticker in the owner's manual. Owner notification is expected to begin during March 2004. Owners should contact Mitsubishi at 1-888-648-7820.

New Car Test Drive Review
Summary:
Longer, wider, taller ... and swell-er.
By Ted West, NewCarTestDrive.com
This is a fully competent dual-purpose SUV. Granted, almost no 2001 Monteros will really see the backcountry--but if they do, they're ready. As an all-weather family vehicle, however, the Montero will see hundreds of millions of miles of service, and it will prove itself thoroughly capable in that demanding role. With dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes standard, the family will be well cared for on the way. With the possible exception of a Land Rover or Mercedes-Benz, you won't find a better-equipped, more versatile sport-utility anywhere. |
Overview:
Mitsubishi Montero has always been one of the more serious sport-utility vehicles. By serious, we mean the Montero was one of the toughest truck-like entries in the category. It has traditionally been designed to be fully capable of trekking across the Great Outback with nothing more than a dirt path and a compass--the Montero supplying the latter. But as the public hunger for SUVs has grown ravenous, not one in a thousand of these trucks will likely ever leave the pavement. Accordingly, the all-new third-generation 2001 Montero has been tailored to provide the kind of comfort, convenience, and even graciousness, expected by pavement-only, soccer-practice-and-mall-shopper tastes. The tough truck is still there underneath, but now it is concealed in a carefully civilized package that will ruffle feathers only when specifically asked to do so. As an all-weather highway cruiser and part-time backcountry buster, the new Montero is one of the most versatile and successful trucks in its category.
