<p>The Mitsubishi Montero Sport was introduced in the 1997 model year and structurally modified beginning with 2001 models to improve occupant protection in frontal offset crashes. </p>
Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. The driver's seat tipped toward the B-pillar and during rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail, B-pillar, and grab handle for the left rear door.
Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia and right foot indicate that injuries to the lower leg and foot would be possible. Head accelerations from the roof rail, B-pillar, and grab handle hits were negligible.

Vehicle Description: Sport utility vehicles equipped with 3.5L engines. These vehicles do not comply with the requirements of FMVSS No. 106, ""Brake Hoses."" These vehicles are equipped with noncompliant brake vacuum hoses. These hoses could burst causing fluid leakage, increasing the braking capability of the vehicle and could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the vacuum hose. Owner notification began February 15, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Mitsubishi at 1-800-222-0037.

Description:

Certain sport utility and passenger vehicles fail to comply with federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 225, ""child restraint anchorage systems."" the owner's manual does not contain a step-by-step description for headrest adjustment when installing a child restraint system (crs) tether strap. If the tether strap is improperly installed to the tether anchor, the child safety seat may not be sufficient restrained. In the event of a crash, the child could be injured. A letter outlining the problem will be sent to owners along with a sticker containing the correct instructions as well as instructions on where to affix the sticker in the owner's manual. Owner notification is expected to begin during March 2004. Owners should contact Mitsubishi at 1-888-648-7820.

With its lean, muscular lines, Mitsubishi's Montero Sport has long been one of the best-looking SUVs. Lately, however, Mitsubishi has been working to prove that beauty is more than skin deep. Last year, the Montero Sport benefited from interior refinements and a coil-sprung rear suspension. For 2001, the body has been re-engineered for greater safety, and both available engines massaged for lower emissions with better fuel economy. Headlining the changes, however, is a new performance-leader 3.5XS model, which combines Mitsubishi's biggest engine with a unique exterior appearance and a surprisingly moderate sticker price.
