The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides 3 different ratings - full-width frontal crash test , side impact crash test , and rollover resistance . The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Overall Evaluation A
Structure/Safety Cage A
Injury Measures
Head/Neck A
Chest G
Leg/foot, left G
Leg/foot, right G
Restraints/dummy kinematics P
Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Ford Explorer was redesigned for the 1995 model year and the Mercury Mountaineer was introduced in 1997.
Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. During the crash, the driver door opened. This opening significantly affected dummy movement during the test and shouldn't happen because, in some crashes, it could allow partial or complete occupant ejection. After the dummy moved suddenly toward the door, its head went outside the occupant compartment. Its neck tilted back excessively when the shoulder belt tightened across the base of the dummy's neck. As the dummy came back into the occupant compartment, its head hit the B-pillar. Measures taken from the head, chest, and legs indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the neck indicate that injuries to the neck would be possible. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was low. 1996 Ford Explorer XLT 4255 none 112 189 70 4.0 L V6 15 20

NHTSA Safety Recalls:
Important: The following recalls were issued for the 2001 FORD EXPLORER SPORT TRAC by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 2001 FORD EXPLORER SPORT TRAC still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 5
NHTSA campaign number: 00V313000
Defective part or component: EQUIPMENT:CERTIFICATION LABEL
Description: Vehicle Description: Certain sport utility vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Part 567.4, ""Certification."" These vehicles were shipped from the assembly plant without Safety Certification Labels. Incorrect tire inflation pressure could result in tire tread separation, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the certification labels.
Recall date: 06-04-2001
Units potentially affected: 13,000,000
NHTSA campaign number: 01X001000
Defective part or component: TIRES:TREAD
Description: This is not a safety recall in accordance with the safety act. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. Ford is replacing all Firestone Wilderness AT 15, 16, and 17 inch tires mounted on Ford trucks and suvs. Ford reports tread separation can occur due to a combination of the sensitivity of the tire design to stress, aging, and manufacturing differences between plants. Ford is replacing these tires to prevent possible premature tire failure. The vehicles listed below may have been originally equipped with Firestone Wilderness AT tires or may have had Wilderness AT tires installed during the Firestone recall launched in August 2000: certain 1991 through 2002 Ford Explorers, certain 2001 through 2002 Explorer Sports and Sport Tracs, certain 1997 through 2002 Mercury Mountaineers, certain 1991 through 2001 Rangers, certain 1999 through 2001 Expeditions, certain 1991 through 1994, and 1997 model year F-series, certain 1991 through 1994 Broncos. Note: both original equipment and replacement tires are affected. Should the tread separate at highway speeds, a vehicle crash could occur, possibly resulting in personal injury or death. The replacement/reimbursement program for this campaign expired on March 31, 2002. However, customers can contact Ford at 1-877-917-3673 or go on-line to www.ford.com for possible assistance.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 448,005
NHTSA campaign number: 03V280000
Defective part or component: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES
Description: On certain sport utility vehicles equipped with speed control and 4.0l sohc engines, if the strand cover on the speed control cable becomes flared at the end, the speed control cable may bind when the speed control is activated. The throttle return spring force may not be sufficient to overcome the binding condition when the speed control is disengaged. Braking function would be maintained though stopping distances may be increased. Dealers will inspect the speed control cable and, if necessary, replace it. Owner notification is expected to begin during August 2003. Owners should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 1,552,880
NHTSA campaign number: 03V281000
Defective part or component: SEATS:FRONT ASSEMBLY:RECLINER
Description: On certain sport utility vehicles equipped with high back seats, the upper bolt on the driver's side high back seat, that attaches the seat recliner mechanism to the seat back frame, could fracture. If the bolt fractures and does not jam in the seat back frame, the seat back may recline until it makes contact with an object behind the seat, such as the second row seat cushion. The driver could potentially lose contact with the steering wheel or foot pedals during such an event, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the driver seat upper bolt with a metal spacer and bolt. In addition, seats with tubular back frames will have the fully threaded lower recliner bolt replaced with a partially threaded bolt. Owner notification is expected to begin during August 2003. Owners should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

The world's best-selling SUV evolves back into a hybrid pickup.
By Sam Moses, NewCarTestDrive.com

If we listed all the flaws mentioned above, this review would sound terribly condemning. But if you listed all the practical innovations and solid strengths-the engine, frame, chassis and body, for example-it would look very impressive. The Explorer isn't the most popular SUV for nothing. There are currently four compact four-door SUV/pickups on the market: Ford Explorer Sport Trac, Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma and Chevy S-10. Sport Trac might actually have the biggest effort behind it. A prospective buyer should look at all four.

Overview:

The vision in Ford's crystal ball was sharp when it presented the Adrenalin concept vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January of 1996. The Adrenalin was the first prototype for the hybrid pickup/SUV genre-a new style pickup truck built with the full cabin of an SUV. The SUV, in turn, had been built on the platform of the old style pickup truck. This new invention in the vehicle world had not come full circle so much as around a tight S curve.

That's the purpose of concept vehicles: to toss out an idea and see if it floats into the reality of the future. When it does, the carmaker looks like it had seen it coming all along. And it has a jump on the market.
