The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

<p>The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute were introduced in the 2001 model year. </p>
Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar.
Measures taken from the chest indicate low risk of injuries to this body region. High head accelerations occurred when the dummy's head hit both the steering wheel through the airbag and the B-pillar, indicating that head injuries would be possible. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be likely. (Note: during the test, some injury data from the left leg was lost, but after the Institute reviewed comparable test data from Ford and Mazda, the left leg injury risk was rated good.)

Measures taken from the dummy indicate that rib fractures would be possible in a crash of this severity. The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low.
Measures taken from the dummies in the two tests of the 2003 model, taken together, indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.
In both tests of the 2003 model, the dummy's head was hit by the pillar behind the rear passenger door. This pillar is required by federal standard to provide some protection for occupants' heads.
2003 Ford Escape XLT 4wd
<p>The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute were introduced in the 2001 model year.</p>
<p>Two tests of a 2003 Escape were conducted, one with an optional side airbag for the driver, and one without. A third test of an Escape, a 2005 model, was conducted because the side airbags were changed beginning with 2005 models to include protection for the rear passenger. These vehicles are rated separately, except that the injury and head protection ratings for the rear passenger are based on both tests of the 2003 models. Structural ratings for the three vehicles are based on all three tests. </p>
The dummy's head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side airbag that deployed from the seat.

FUEL:THROTTLE LINKAGES AND CONTROL
Description:
Vehicle Description: Sport utility vehicles equipped with speed control. The speed control cable can have a cracked or missing speed control cable servo cap locating tab. The locating tab could enter the servo clutch cavity and interfere with the speed control servo clutch. Also, water could enter those units that contain a cracked or missing servo cap locating tab, eventually causing corrosion that could interfere with the function of the speed control. If either of these conditions occurs and the speed control is used, the speed control could prevent the throttle from returning to idle, resulting in a stuck throttle. A stuck throttle could result in a crash. Dealers will inspect the speed control cables. Vehicles with speed control cables from cavities 3 and 4 will have the cable the speed control servo replaced.

STEERING:WHEEL AND COLUMN
Description:
Vehicle Description: Sport utility vehicles. These vehicles may have a mis-assembled or incorrectly manufactured nut that attaches the steering wheel assembly to the steering column. The nut could be upside down in the steering wheel assembly, which could overstress the steering column shaft when the nut is tightened. In addition, some of the nuts may have been cracked during manufacture resulting in the nut fracturing when it is tightened during vehicle assembly. Either of these conditions can lead to the steering wheel becoming loose or separating from the steering column, resulting in loss of steering control. Dealers will inspect and replace the steering wheel retention armature and, if necessary, the steering column to correct this condition.

WHEELS:HUB
Description:
Vehicle Description: Some 4x2 sport utility vehicles not equipped with an antilock braking system may have inadvertently been built with 4x4 rear hubs instead of 4x2 hubs. If the incorrect hubs are installed on a 4x2 vehicle, the rear wheels can loosen, or in some cases, separate from the vehicle. This condition could cause loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect the rear hubs and, if necessary, replace them. Owner notification began September 25, 2000. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

FUEL:FUEL LINES FITTINGS AND PUMP
Description:
Vehicle Description: Sport utility vehicles. The O-ring seals in the fuel line connector at the outlet end of the fuel filter were damaged when the line was connected to the filter during vehicle assembly. In some cases, this damage could result in a fuel odor, or possibly in fuel dripping from the connection. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the fuel line. Owner notification began September 27, 2000. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
Description:
On certain sport utility vehicles, a post within the safety belt buckle covers could fracture which could affect latch function, resulting in either ""no latch"" or ""partial latch"" condition. In the ""partial latch"" condition, the buckle tongue can be inserted into the buckle and appear to be engaged, but will release from the buckle without the push button being depressed when a relatively low load is applied, such as when an occupant moves slightly in the seat. In the event of a crash, the seat occupant may not be properly restrained increasing the risk of personal injury. Dealers will have the driver and front passenger safety belt buckle cover removed and replaced with a newly designed service buckle cover. Owner notification is expected to begin during January 2004. Owners should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
Description:
Certain 2004-2005 sport utility vehicles and certain 2001-2003 sport utiity vehicle having rear liftgate components serviced with 2004 equivalent components fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 206, door locks and door retention components. The rear liftgate latching system does not meet the inertia load requirement in one direction. If the liftgate is left unlocked, there is the potential that it may open during a crash. Dealers will replace the rear liftgate latch release rod, the release rod attachment clip and the door handle return spring. The recall is expected to begin on January 24, 2005. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
Description:
On certain sport utility vehicles equipped with antilock brakes (ABS), the ABS module connector may have missing or dislodged wire seals. This condition could allow contamination to enter the module connector, creating a potential for an electrical short. An electrical short might cause an ABS malfunction that would illuminate the ABS warning light, and in some cases, the module may overheat resulting in burning odor, smoke, and/or fire. This condition could occur either when the vehicle ignition switch is in the off position or while the vehicle is being operated. Dealers will inspect the wire harness connector to the ABS module for missing or dislodged wire seals, and repair or replace the harness connector as appropriate. The dealer will also inspect the connector on the ABS module and replace it if it is found to be corroded or damaged. The recall is expected to begin on or about April 23, 2007. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

New Car Test Drive Review
Summary:
Best-in-class handling, performance and refinement.
By Mitch McCullough, Editor-in-Chief, NewCarTestDrive.com
With the optional V6 engine, the Ford Escape offers the most power in its category. A four-wheel independent suspension and unitbody construction makes it handle almost as well as a car. A car-like ride makes it easy to live with. Overall, we feel the Escape is the best SUV in its class. |
Overview:
If high cost, big size and poor handling have held you back from buying a sport-utility vehicle, then you may find the new Ford Escape appealing. At least that's Ford's thinking and we believe they are right on track. A completely new vehicle, the Ford Escape offers agile handling on both paved and unpaved roads. It rides smoothly and gets strong acceleration performance from an optional V6. The Escape seats four people comfortably, and folding down the rear seats reveals a flat, moderately sized cargo area. Best of all, its price is relatively low. Ford Escape and the nearly identical Mazda Tribute may be the best small sport-utility vehicles sold today.
