NHTSA Safety Recalls:
Important: The following recalls were issued for the 2001 CHEVROLET C1500 SUBURBAN by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 2001 CHEVROLET C1500 SUBURBAN still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: 10-25-2000
Units potentially affected: 35,659
NHTSA campaign number: 00V343000
Defective part or component: STRUCTURE:BODY:WHEEL WELL
Description: Vehicle Description: Light duty pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. Some of these vehicles have loose or missing rear wheelhouse plugs. Under certain vehicle operating conditions, exhaust gases can flow forward and accumulate in the rear wheelhouse. These gases could flow into the passenger compartment if the plug is missing or loose and could cause possible illness, unconsciousness, or death. Dealers will inspect the vehicle for loose or missing wheelhouse plugs and install new plugs if necessary.
Recall date: 10-19-2005
Units potentially affected: 316,508
NHTSA campaign number: 05V155000
Defective part or component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
Description: Certain trucks and sport utility vehicles were built with fuel module reservoir assemblies that contain fuel pump wire connectors that may overheat under certain operating conditions. If the ignition circuit wire is exposed, the fuel pump fuse will blow, disabling the fuel pump and causing an engine stall or no-start condition. If sufficient heat is conducted to the pass-through connector, a hole in the connector may result, which may cause a ""service engine soon"" light to be illuminated during the emission system diagnostic routine. Fuel vapor, and in some cases, liquid fuel may leak out of the fuel tank through the hole in the connector body. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire. Also, if the ignition circuit or ground wire is exposed and shorts to the fuel level sender card wires, inaccurate fuel level readings may result. Dealers will remove the fuel tank, and remove the module reservoir assemblies from the tank, and install a new service kit free of charge. An interim letter to owners was mailed on may 25, 2005. The owners were re-notified on October 19, 2005, since parts are now available. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 and GMC at 1-866-996-9463.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 804,000
NHTSA campaign number: 05V379000
Defective part or component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK
Description: Certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles may experience unwanted antilock brake system (ABS) activation. This condition is more likely to occur in environmentally corrosive areas. This recall will be launched in the ""salt belt"" states of Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and west Virginia only. This can cause increased stopping distances during low-speed brake applications, which could result in a crash. Dealers are to remove the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing, apply rust inhibitor to the cleaned surface, grease the mounting surface, reinstall the wheel speed sensor, and check the peak-to-peak output voltage to ensure the wheel speed signal is within specifications. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.

New Car Test Drive Review

Summary:

Bigger gets better.
By Mitch McCullough, Editor-in-Chief, NewCarTestDrive.com

We love the Suburban. It's a great vehicle for moving cargo, towing trailers, or hauling people. Get sleepy on a long trip and you can simply pull over and stretch out in back.

While Ford's giant Excursion has taken the Suburban's long-held position as the largest sport-utility vehicle, it doesn't match the smooth ride and all-around utility of the 'Burb. Excursion is not a good choice if you're just moving people around. Suburban's greater maneuverability makes it a much more sensible choice for that role.

Overview:

Chevy's Suburban was totally redesigned and re-engineered for 2000. New engines offered substantially more power; a more rigid frame and a re-engineered suspension provided excellent handling; brakes were greatly improved for pedal feel and performance; and the interior was upgraded for greater comfort and convenience.

The whole vehicle was so vastly improved and refined that you might think the engineers would take a year off, but they haven't: 2001 brings more horsepower for the 2500 model's standard 6.0-liter V8. And a new 8.1-liter V8 is now available for 2500-series models for behemoth towing tasks.

For all these changes, however, the Suburban retains the same folksy qualities that people have loved since its 1935 inception: a cavernous interior, strong torque for towing, off-road capability, and a stable, comfortable ride for long-distance travel.
