The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides 3 different ratings - full-width frontal crash test , side impact crash test , and rollover resistance . The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash.

Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 were redesigned during the 1999 model year (the old design continued into the early part of the 1999 model year). The Classic nameplate was added in the 2007 model year to distinguish these carryover trucks from the redesigned 2007 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500.

Note: These ratings do NOT apply to the redesigned 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500.
Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. After the dummy moved forward into the airbag, its head dropped down below the window sill. Then the head rebounded upward and hit the shoulder belt housing, which is mounted directly to the seat back. There was far too much upward movement of the steering wheel. Also, the driver seat came loose on one of its tracks and moved rearward slightly on the right side, where the safety belt buckle is anchored. Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. Head acceleration from the belt housing hit was low. 2001 Chevrolet Silverado LS 1500 (2wd extended cab) 4709 none 144 228 78 4.8 L V8 16 20

NHTSA Safety Recalls:
Important: The following recalls were issued for the 2001 CHEVROLET C1500 SILVERADO by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 2001 CHEVROLET C1500 SILVERADO still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: 04-07-2004
Units potentially affected: 3,662,211
NHTSA campaign number: 04V129000
Defective part or component: STRUCTURE:BODY:TAILGATE:HINGE AND ATTACHMENTS
Description: On certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, the galvanized steel tailgate support cables that retain the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position may corrode, weaken, and eventually fracture. If both cables fractured, the tailgate would suddenly drop and strike the top surface of the rear bumper. Anyone sitting or standing on the horizontal surface of the tailgate when both cables fractured could be injured by falling from the tailgate. On vehicles that have had the bumper removed, the tailgate may drop even lower. Additionally, if there is cargo on the tailgate the cargo may fall off if the support cables fracture. Dealers will replace the cables. Interim owner notification began on April 7, 2004. Additional owner notification is expected to begin during the third quarter of 2004, when replacement parts will be available. Owners should contact Cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC at 1-866-996-9463, or visit www.mygmlink.com, and enter your vehicle identification number.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 90,242
NHTSA campaign number: 05V161000
Defective part or component: PARKING BRAKE
Description: On certain pickup trucks equipped with manual transmissions and built with either PBR parking brake systems or TRW parking brake systems, the parking brake friction linings may wear to an extent where the parking brake can become ineffective in immobilizing a parked vehicle. If the parking brake does not hold, unintended vehicle movement could occur, which could result in a crash. Dealers will install a low-force spring clip retainer for vehicles equipped with a PBR parking brake system. On vehicles equipped with the TRW parking brake system, dealers will install a redesigned parking brake cable assembly. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule for this campaign. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 804,000
NHTSA campaign number: 05V379000
Defective part or component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK
Description: Certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles may experience unwanted antilock brake system (ABS) activation. This condition is more likely to occur in environmentally corrosive areas. This recall will be launched in the ""salt belt"" states of Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and west Virginia only. This can cause increased stopping distances during low-speed brake applications, which could result in a crash. Dealers are to remove the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing, apply rust inhibitor to the cleaned surface, grease the mounting surface, reinstall the wheel speed sensor, and check the peak-to-peak output voltage to ensure the wheel speed signal is within specifications. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

Advanced engineering in a familiar package.
By Jim McCraw, NewCarTestDrive.com

The Chevrolet Silverado is by far the best among full-size pickups. And it is the newest design from the Big Three Detroit manufacturers. The Silverado LT we drove is the smoothest, quietest, most civilized, best equipped, and most enjoyable pickup truck we've driven in many years. If you're shopping for a full-size pickup truck this year that you'll still want to be driving in 2009, check out the Silverado.

Overview:

Ford may have the best-selling pickup in America, but a whole lot of Americans still prefer a Chevrolet. While Dearborn's most recent light-duty pickup has taken on a windswept, aerodynamic look, and Dodge has carved a niche with its vaguely retro, little big-rig theme, Chevrolet has stuck with a more conservative shape, bluff in the nose and square in the shoulders. Chevrolet feels its customers are more comfortable with traditional truck styling. So when the Chevy pickup was totally re-designed, re-engineered and even re-named for 1999, its styling was updated but not radically changed.

At the same time, however, Chevrolet caught up with (or even surpassed) the technology and refinement of the more radical looking Ford and Dodge. The Silverado, as Chevy calls its pickups now, is a great achievement, better than the previous "C/K" truck in every respect. It rides better, handles better and stops quicker; it's faster and it's more comfortable. In fact, the Silverado ranks as one of the most luxurious pickups we've ever driven.

For 2001, Silverado adds even more power, convenience and durability. All extended-cab models now have two auxiliary rear doors, rather than just one on the curbside. Extended-cab 1500s with four-wheel drive are available with a Pro-Tec fully composite box that's virtually impervious to dents or corrosion. OnStar is available on newer LT models. Finally, the 6.0-liter V8 that is standard in 2500 models has been given aluminum heads and more aggressive valve timing, for a nice, round 300 horsepower at 4400 rpm, and 360 pound-feet of torque at 4000.
