The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides 3 different ratings - full-width frontal crash test , side impact crash test , and rollover resistance . The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Head/Neck G
Chest G
Leg/foot, left A

Restraints/dummy kinematics P
Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Chevrolet S-10 and GMC Sonoma were redesigned for the 1994 model year. The Isuzu Hombre was introduced in 1996 and discontinued after the 2000 model year. For all three models, frontal airbags for both the driver and passenger became standard beginning with the 1998 model year.
Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. After the dummy moved forward into the airbag, it rebounded toward the driver door, which had bowed outward, and its head nearly hit the windowsill. In addition, there was too much movement of the steering wheel. Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on both tibias and the right knee indicate that injuries to the knee and lower legs would be possible. 1998 Chevrolet S-10 LS (2wd regular cab) 3126 none 108 190 68 2.2 L 4-cylinder 19 26

NHTSA Safety Recalls:
Important: The following recalls were issued for the 2001 CHEVROLET S10 by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 2001 CHEVROLET S10 still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: 05-31-2001
Units potentially affected: 77,485
NHTSA campaign number: 01V125000
Defective part or component: EQUIPMENT:TIRE RESERVE LOAD LABEL (GLOVE COMPARTMENT)
Description: Vehicle Description: Certain 2-wheel drive pickup trucks fail to comply with requirements of FMVSS No. 120, (Tire Selection and Rims for Motor Vehicles other than Passenger Cars). The problem was caused by a computer error that resulted in the certification label listing tire size and inflation pressure information that differ from the tire size and the inflation pressure information for the tires on the vehicle. If the vehicle owner or someone servicing the vehicle inflates the tires according to the pressure specified on the label versus the appropriate pressure for the tires, the tires could be under-inflated or over-inflated depending on the tires mounted on the vehicle. If the tires are under-inflated, it could reduce the tread life of the tire, and the tire could degrade to a point of allowing sudden air loss. If the tires are over-inflated, it could reduce the tread life of the tire and increase susceptibility to road hazard damage. If sudden air loss or a road hazard causes damage to a tire, control of the vehicle could be adversely affected and could result in a vehicle crash. Owners will be provided with a new label and installation instructions. However, a dealer can install the label if the owner so desires. Owner notification began May 31, 2001. Owners who do not receive the label and installation instructions within a reasonable time should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC at 1-800-462-8782.

This 2001 CHEVROLET S10 safety recall information was provided by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Data Loss Institute and is derived from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration list of safety recalls. New Car Test Drive Review

Summary:

New Crew Cab model expands versatility.
By John Matras, NewCarTestDrive.com

It all comes down to this. The Chevrolet S-10 is a truck. It rides like a truck, it corners like a truck and, as a truck, it has more cargo room than passenger room. If that's what you need, or if that's what you want, you most likely won't mind a ride that will never compare to that of an automobile. In that regard, the S-10 is like a steel glove lined with, well, not velvet, but velour.

A Chevy pickup is a safe buy, a known quantity with dealer service in every other town, which is nice to know even if you don't need it as much as you once did.

Overview:

Depending on how it's ordered, Chevrolet's S-10 Pickup can be a no-nonsense work truck with vinyl seats and full-floor vinyl covering. Or it can be more like that other car in the driveway, as with the LS model's full carpeting and velour Deluxe Custom Cloth seats. Now there's an all-new 4WD Crew Cab model with sedan-like amenities and roominess along with the utility of a pickup.

Whether hauling manure, driving to work or heading into the backcountry, the S-10 LS can provide car-like comfort - or close to it - even with four-wheel drive.
