Important: The following recalls were issued for the 2001 ACURA MDX by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 2001 ACURA MDX still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 600,000
NHTSA campaign number: 04V176000
Defective part or component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Description: On some mini vans, and sport utility vehicles, certain operating conditions can result in heat build-up between the countershaft and secondary shaft second gears in the automatic transmission eventually leading to gear tooth chipping or gear breakage can occur. Gear failure could result in transmission lockup, which could result in a crash. on vehicles with 15,000 miles or less, the dealer will update the transmission with a simple revision to the oil cooler return line to increase lubrication to the second gear. On vehicles with more than 15,000 miles, the dealer will inspect the transmission to identify gears that have already experienced discoloration due to overheating. If discoloration exists, the transmission will be replaced If discoloration is not present, the dealer will perform the revision to the oil cooler return line. Owner notification is expected to begin on or about May 12, 2004. Owners should contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009 or Acura at 1-800-382-2238.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 22,861

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

Maybe late to the party but worth the wait.
By Denise McCluggage and Fred Vang, NewCarTestDrive.com

The Acura MDX combines most of the virtues of the SUV genre and diminishes or eliminates most of its vices. Anyone seeking comfort, performance, spaciousness, flexibility, proven safety features, environmental awareness and driving pleasure in a value-loaded package must have a look at the MDX.

Overview:

The Acura MDX is a totally new sport-utility vehicle. It represents Honda's acceptance that the luxury SUV market is big and still rapidly growing.

If Honda ever believed sport-utility vehicles would become such a monster success in the marketplace the company did not act like it. Late to the SUV party, Honda rebadged the Isuzu Rodeo as the Honda Passport. The Isuzu Trooper emerged as the Acura SLX.

Now comes the much-anticipated in-house SUV. Acura claims its MDX offers best-in-class V6 horsepower and torque, greatest fuel efficiency, "greenest" emissions, and best crashworthiness. The MDX offers seven-passenger capacity and a unique four-wheel-drive system that prevents skids almost before they occur. All this is wrapped in a neat though not flashy package with the calm attention to detail expected of things Honda.
