The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

WHEELS
Description:
Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. The cooling holes in the steel wheel may have burrs on their edges as a result of improper manufacturing. These burrs can cause cracks as the vehicle is being driven. Cracks can propagate between adjacent cooling holes. If enough cracks develop between the cooling holes, the wheel could fail and separate from the mounting hub without prior warning. Separation of the wheel from the vehicle while being operated could result in a vehicle crash. Dealers will inspect for cracks and replace the wheel if cracks are discovered. Owner notification will be conducted in two phases. The first mailing began October 1, 2001, asking owners to bring their vehicles in to a dealer for inspection of the wheels. Any wheels with cracks will be replaced. A second owner notification will begin in early December, at which time Nissan will have an adequate number of replacement wheels, requesting owners to return to their dealers to have the wheels replaced. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

ENGINE
Description:
Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles equipped with a 1.8 liter engine. The engine could stop running while being driven due to a defective crank position sensor. This could also result in the ""Service Engine Soon"" warning light coming on or reduced engine power. If the engine stops running while the vehicle is in motion, it could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the crank position sensors. Owner notification began December 10, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Description:
On certain passenger vehicles, the circuit board for the crank position sensor may have an improper solder joint due to solder deformation caused by heat stress accelerated by the existence of flux residue during the soldering process. This could cause the (service engine soon) warning light to come on, create a no start condition, cause reduced engine power, or cause the engine to stop running without warning during vehicle operation, which could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the crank position sensors. Vehicles involved in a previous recall campaign, 01v357, are also included in this new campaign. The replacement sensors used in that campaign are also affected. Owner notification is expected to begin during December 2003. Owners should contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or Infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:MODULE
Description:
On certain passenger vehicles equipped with the qg18de engine or qr25de engines, the foam material used for the interior lining of the electronic control module (ecm) box out-gases sulfur as it cures. If one of the resistors inside the ecm has a crack on the surface coating, the gas may cause corrosion of the resistor. This could cause the malfunction indicator light to come on, poor drivability (idle instability, poor accelerator), or the engine to stop running without warning during vehicle operation, which could result in a crash. Dealers will remove the inside lining material from the ecm box. Owner notification is expected to begin during December 2003. Owners should contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Description:
On certain electric vehicles, the front suspension transverse link's ball joint bracket may break from stress concentration at a notch created by surface roughness and the shape of the material cut-line. Nothing Specified Dealers will replace the bracket on these vehicles. Owner notification is expected to begin during January 2004. Owners should contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

Engine
Occasional problems on this vehicle are failures of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor, and Intake Valve Timing Control Position (IVTC) Sensor. Failure of the MAF Sensor can cause a drivability problem, and may cause the Check Engine Light to illuminate. Problems with the IVTC Position Sensor may cause the Check Engine light to illuminate. The cost to replace the MAF Sensor is estimated at $488.19 for parts and $32.50 for labor. The cost to repair the IVTP Position Sensor is estimated at $50.00 for parts and $39.00 for labor. All prices are estimates based on $65,00 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax.

New Car Test Drive Review
Summary:
All new, it's bigger, better looking and highly refined.
By Phil Berg, NewCarTestDrive.com
Nissan's new Sentra is a willing sedan with a smoothness that leaves you feeling it's worth more than its price. Cruising along an interstate is a peaceful experience in both the GXE and the SE models. On winding roads, it offers sporty handling that makes it fun to drive. Stiff suspension tuning and big 16-inch wheels with Firestone Firehawk GTA tires give the SE with the Performance Package the abilities of a European sedan.All-new styling is neat and proportioned. We sense that Nissan is in the position that Volkswagen was a decade ago when its cars were very good, but nobody noticed, and few purchased. If you're in the market for an affordable sedan that's easy to look at and tons of fun to drive, then you shouldn't wait for Nissan's fortunes in the mass market to improve as a result of this new Sentra. |
Overview:
Flush with development money from new corporate partner Renault, Nissan has completely redesigned its Sentra for model year 2000. A late introduction, you can think of this as a 2001 model. This new Sentra is much more attractive than the 1999 model. It's a bigger car - a lot longer, a little wider and a bit taller. Fortunately, the Sentra's smooth-running character has been preserved. There's more power under the hood, particularly for the XE and GXE models, which come with a new 1.8-liter engine. A performance package turns the 2.0-liter SE model into a small sports sedan in looks and in performance. Indeed, the all-new Nissan Sentra is now a less-expensive competitor for Volkswagen's hot-selling Jetta. And that's quite a compliment.
