Recall date: 05-22-2000
Units potentially affected: 7,100
NHTSA campaign number: 00V141000
Defective part or component: EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:AIR CONDITIONER
Description: Due to an internal defect in the circuitry of the blower motor regulator, the regulator may overheat. This could cause surrounding plastic, insulation, and wiring to deform and possibly melt or burn. Dealers will replace the blower motor regulator.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 613
NHTSA campaign number: 01V247000
Defective part or component: LIGHTING:SWITCH:BUTTON:RING:HEAD LIGHTS
Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. These vehicles fail to conform with the requirements of FMVSS No. 108, ""Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."" When the low beam headlamps are activated, the Xenon lamps are aimed to illuminate the road surface. In the high beam mode the light from the Xenon bulbs are redirected and additional Halogen bulbs also illuminate when the high beams are activated. When this occurs, the combination of Xenon bulb and Halogen bulb exceed the permitted light output. Drivers in incoming vehicles may experience increased glare from the high beam lighting which could result in the potential for a crash. Dealers will modify the aim of the Halogen headlamp bulbs in the high beam mode. Owner notification began October 15, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Mercedes-Benz at 1-800-367-6372.

Units potentially affected: 54,454
NHTSA campaign number: 04V227000
Defective part or component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS
Description: On certain passenger vehicles, during the production process of the blower motor fuse holder, the size of the electric conductor of the holder may be below appropriate tolerances. Consequently, the electric conductor of the holder may dissipate more heat than the plastic fuse holder was designed to withstand, which could result in partial melting of the blower motor fuse holder and disabling of the blower motor. Dealers will install new blower motor fuse holders. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule for this campaign. Owners should contact Mercedes-Benz at 1-800-367-6372.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 36,911
NHTSA campaign number: 06V028000
Defective part or component: INTERIOR LIGHTING
Description: On certain vehicles, the instrument cluster is experiencing electrical malfunctions. The instrument cluster contains gauges and indicators that must be illuminated whenever the vehicle is in operation. Due to inadequate illumination, the driver will be unable to read the gauges and indicators, such as the speedometer, which could increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the instrument cluster modules. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners may contact Mercedes Benz at 1-800-367-6372.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

A pretty face with power and grace to match.
By Dan Carney, NewCarTestDrive.com

The CL500 represents the pinnacle of Mercedes technology and style. It competes for attention with the Jaguar XK8 and the Aston-Martin DB7, but buyers also look at the Lexus SC400 and Porsche 911, according to Mercedes. For the first time, the Mercedes has exterior styling to compete with the other exotic European models, but in a uniquely Mercedes package of high technology, convenience, comfort and safety.

Overview:

Mercedes has delivered the best, most exclusive luxury coupe available with its new CL-Class. Totally redesigned, the CL500 features an array of innovations that should impress the most jaded technophile. Yet it wraps all that technology in leather and walnut, so as not to offend the most dedicated technophobe. Mercedes says the new CL-Class is designed for people who believe "good just isn't good enough."
