Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight. <p>The Ford Explorer was redesigned for the 1995 model year and the Mercury Mountaineer was introduced in 1997.</p> Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. During the crash, the driver door opened. This opening significantly affected dummy movement during the test and shouldn't happen because, in some crashes, it could allow partial or complete occupant ejection. After the dummy moved suddenly toward the door, its head went outside the occupant compartment. Its neck tilted back excessively when the shoulder belt tightened across the base of the dummy's neck. As the dummy came back into the occupant compartment, its head hit the B-pillar. Measures taken from the head, chest, and legs indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the neck indicate that injuries to the neck would be possible. The subject vehicles have a revised level side crash sensor that could deploy the side air bag if the ignition key is in the ""run"" position and the seatbelt webbing is forcibly extracted from a locked retractor with a jerking motion. Inadvertent side air bag deployment could cause personal injury to the seat occupant. Dealers will replace the side crash sensors with a revised design that will reduce the likelihood of an unexpected side air bag deployment.

Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles, light duty trucks, sport utility vehicles, and mini vans equipped with TRW seat belt buckle assemblies. The buckle base of these seat belt assemblies were not properly heat treated and therefore do not pass the load bearing requirement of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 209, ""Seat Belt Assemblies."" In the event of a vehicle crash, the occupant may not be properly restrained. Dealers will inspect the date code on certain seat belt buckles of your vehicle and replace all seat belt buckles that fall within the suspect date code range. Owner notification began October 26, 2000. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

Description: Vehicle Description: Sport utility vehicles equipped with the 3.27 or 3.55 axle ration. The subject vehicles have a Powertrain Control Module that could allow the vehicle to exceed the design intent top speed. At these extreme speeds, the vehicle could be capable of exceeding the speed rating of the tire. Operating the vehicle above the maximum speed rating could lead to a tire failure which at these speeds could result in a crash. Dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module.

Description: This is not a safety recall in accordance with the safety act. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. Ford is replacing all Firestone Wilderness AT 15, 16, and 17 inch tires mounted on Ford trucks and suvs. Ford reports tread separation can occur due to a combination of the sensitivity of the tire design to stress, aging, and manufacturing differences between plants. Ford is replacing these tires to prevent possible premature tire failure. The vehicles listed below may have been originally equipped with Firestone Wilderness AT tires or may have had Wilderness AT tires installed during the Firestone recall launched in August 2000: certain 1991 through 2002 Ford Explorers, certain 2001 through 2002 Explorer Sports and Sport Tracs, certain 1997 through 2002 Mercury Mountaineers, certain 1991 through 2001 Rangers, certain 1999 through 2001 Expeditions, certain 1991 through 1994, and 1997 model year F-series, certain 1991 through 1994 Broncos. Note: both original equipment and replacement tires are affected. Should the tread separate at highway speeds, a vehicle crash could occur, possibly resulting in personal injury or death. The replacement/reimbursement program for this campaign expired on March 31, 2002. However, customers can contact Ford at 1-877-917-3673 or go on-line to www.ford.com for possible assistance.

Description: On certain sport utility vehicles equipped with speed control and 4.0l sohc engines, if the strand cover on the speed control cable becomes flared at the end, the speed control cable may bind when the speed control is activated. The throttle return spring force may not be sufficient to overcome the binding condition when the speed control is disengaged. Braking function would be maintained though stopping distances may be increased. Dealers will inspect the speed control cable and, if necessary, replace it. Owner notification is expected to begin during August 2003. Owners should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

Defective part or component: SEATS:FRONT ASSEMBLY:RECLINER
Description: On certain sport utility vehicles equipped with high back seats, the upper bolt on the driver's side high back seat, that attaches the seat recliner mechanism to the seat back frame, could fracture. If the bolt fractures and does not jam in the seat back frame, the seat back may recline until it makes contact with an object behind the seat, such as the second row seat cushion. The driver could potentially lose contact with the steering wheel or foot pedals during such an event, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the driver seat upper bolt with a metal spacer and bolt. In addition, seats with tubular back frames will have the fully threaded lower recliner bolt replaced with a partially threaded bolt. Owner notification is expected to begin during August 2003. Owners should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

The Explorer is the modern American station wagon. If Norman Rockwell were alive today, he'd be painting families in Ford Explorers. The Explorer shares the cargo-hauling capability of the station wagons of yore, but it adds ground clearance and, in 4x4 versions, the promise of all-season mobility. Beyond that, the Explorer offers a utilitarian, outdoorsy image that no minivan can match.

Overview:

The Ford Explorer is easily the best-selling sport-utility in America. Nearly one of every six sport-utilities sold today is a Ford Explorer. Nearly 2.8 million SUVs were sold in 1998 and some 425,000 of them were Ford Explorers. About 430,000 Explorers were sold in 1999. The Explorer outsold its nearest competitor nearly two-to-one.

What's the significance of all these numbers? Simply this: Ford must be doing something right to sell so many Explorers. Indeed, the Explorer offers something for just about everyone, from budget-priced XLS models to feature-laden Eddie Bauer and premium Limited models. There are two-door and four-door Explorers with V6 and V8 engines and two- and 4-wheel drive.

As if that's not enough, the 2-door Sport model gets its own identity with special styling cues and a new model, the Explorer Sport Trac, will combine the features of a sport-utility and a pickup truck.
