The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Pontiac Trans Sport (renamed Montana in 1999), the Chevrolet Venture, and the Oldsmobile Silhouette were redesigned for the 1997 model year. The Silhouette was dropped after the 2004 model year, and a limited number of Pontiac Montanas and Chevrolet Ventures were manufactured for the 2005 model year.
Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. After moving forward into the airbag, the dummy's head and neck were snapped rearward as the steering wheel intruded. Then the dummy's head was hit from behind by the seatback and head restraint as they tilted forward because of floor buckling. The seat continued moving forward and pushed down on top of the dummy's head, bending its neck back even farther. Measures taken from the chest indicate low risk of injuries to this body region in a crash of this severity. Forces on the neck indicate that injuries to the neck would be likely. Forces on both tibias indicate that injuries to the lower legs would be likely. The forces on the left lower leg were so high that the dummy's metal foot broke off from its leg at the ankle. 1997 Pontiac Trans Sport SE 3783 none 112 187 73 3.4 L V6 18 25

Recall date: 08-17-2000
Units potentially affected: 156,305
NHTSA campaign number: 00V228003
Defective part or component: INTERIOR SYSTEMS:ACTIVE RESTRAINTS:BELT BUCKLES
Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles, light duty trucks, sport utility vehicles, and mini vans equipped with TRW seat belt buckle assemblies. The buckle base of these seat belt assemblies were not properly heat treated and therefore do not pass the load bearing requirement of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 209, ""Seat Belt Assemblies."" In the event of a vehicle crash, the occupant may not be properly restrained. Dealers will inspect the vehicle's rear safety belt buckle assembly date codes and, if necessary, will replace any rear safety belt buckle assembly.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 717,302
NHTSA campaign number: 04V597000
Defective part or component: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
Description: On certain minivans equipped with second-row bucket seats or captains chairs and a power sliding door on the passenger side of the vehicle, a passenger using the interior handle to open the power sliding door could be injured. If a passenger uses the interior handle to open the power sliding door and holds onto the handle while it is being opened by the motor, the passengers arm may be pushed into the seat back or armrest and a wrist or lower arm injury may result. Dealers will replace the power sliding door interior handle on the passenger-side. If the vehicle is equipped with a power or manual sliding door on the driver-side, the interior handle will also be replaced for appearance reasons. Note: before the vehicle is serviced, GM advises owners to not use the interior door handle to open the door. The driver can open and close the door from switches at the drivers position or by using the remote key fob. The driver should tell passengers to use the switch located in front of the door to open or close it. The driver should use the override switch to prevent operation of the power door by children or by others who are not familiar with its use. The recall is expected to begin in March 2005. Owners should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438; Pontiac at 1-800-620-7668; or Oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537.
Recall date: 09-29-1999
Units potentially affected: 235
NHTSA campaign number: 99V268000
Defective part or component: FUEL: VEHICLE CRASH, CUT OFF SYSTEM (5-94)
Description: Vehicle Description: Mini vans with extended wheelbase. Some of these vehicles have inoperative fuel tank rollover valves and fuel leakage would exceed the permissible amount in a rollover test. This does not comply with the requirements of FMVSS No. 301, ""Fuel system Integrity."" In a vehicle rollover accident, if an ignition source is present, a fire could result. Dealers will inspect the vehicles to locate and replace those fuel tanks that could have inoperative rollover valves.

Summary:

Affordable space for active folks.
By Phil Berg, NewCarTestDrive.com

The Chevy Venture is ready to haul a bunch of folks or a load of hardware from the home-improvement center. It seats seven or eight comfortably. Lots of storage bins and cubby holes add convenience. On the road, it's smooth and quiet with good throttle response and carlike handling.

Overview:

It helps to know yourself and your family pretty well before you wander into the Chevrolet store to look at minivans. There's a Chevy Venture designed for every imaginable type of family and the number of models can be confusing. They are based on what type of seating arrangements you want and how flexible you need those arrangements to be. Chevrolet claims 200 different seating set-ups are possible in the Venture by removing and adding seats in different places.

New for 2000 is a model offering the videotape and video game players and built-in headphone controls that have been popular for the past two years on the Oldsmobile Silhouette.
