Description:
|
Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. The tie rods of the steering assembly are protected on each side by a seal to prevent moisture and dust particles from entering the swivel bearing mechanism. It is possible that some tie rod seals may not seal properly. If moisture and/or dust particles enter the swivel bearing mechanism, the swivel bearing could wear over time diminishing the steering control of the vehicle. Dealers will replace the tie rods.

Description:
|
On some passenger vehicles, the fuel tank filler neck can suffer abrasion damage if the rear tire goes flat and the vehicle is driven until the tire disintegrates. Fuel leakage can occur increasing the risk of a fire. Dealers will fit Passat vehicles with a new wheel house liner that will better protect the car's filler neck. Jetta vehicles will be fitted with a different metal shield designed to enhance abrasion protection in the event of tire disintegration. Owner notification began June 13, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987.

Occasional problems on this vehicle are failures of the Engine, Timing Belt, Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor (4 cylinder engines only), the Ignition Power Stage (1.8L engine only), and the Water Pump. Problems with the Engine are caused when the engine oil gels. When proper maintenance schedules for oil changes are followed, oil gelling should not occur. The cost to repair the Engine is estimated at $5,899 for parts and $858 for labor. The cost to replace the Timing Belt is estimated at $62 for parts and $195 for labor. The cost to replace the MAF Sensor is estimated at $380 for parts and $58.50 for labor. Volkswagen has issued a warranty extension due to the high number of MAF Sensor failures. MAF Sensors are now warranted for 7 years, 70,000 miles on 1999 through 2001 models. The cost to replace the Ignition Power Stage is estimated at $125 for parts and $52 for labor. The cost to replace the Water Pump is estimated at $133.15 for the parts and $234 for labor on the 1.8L engine, and $151.35 for parts and $338 for labor on the 2.8L engine. All prices are estimates based on $65 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax.

The Volkswagen Passat is beautifully assembled. It performs and handles like a sports car, but rides like a small luxury sedan. It's roomy, comprehensively equipped and economical.The Passat GLS offers an outstanding value when compared with other cars in its class. None of them, after all, can claim to be top-flight German performance sedans. For us, that alone is enough to put the Volkswagen Passat at the head of the shopping list. |

We all know about German sport sedans. They are speedy beasts, qualified to occupy the fast lane on those few stretches of German Autobahn where unlimited speeds are still possible. They deal with corners gracefully, can stop on the proverbial pfennig and are spacious and comfortable inside. Traditionally, they are built by Mercedes-Benz, BMW or Audi. Volkswagen would like to offer you those same attributes. They come in slightly scaled-down form in the Volkswagen Passat. The Passat may offer a little less speed and a minimal decrease in amenities, but these seem small sacrifices when accompanied by its significant drop in price. The Passat set new standards for its class when it was introduced as a completely redesigned car last year. The reason is simple: Most of the hardware that really matters was borrowed from the superb Audi A4, the leading entry in a slightly more expensive category. Overall, the Passat is an attractive alternative to the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry or Nissan Maxima.
