NHTSA Safety Recalls:
Important: The following recalls were issued for the 1999 FORD WINDSTAR LX by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 1999 FORD WINDSTAR LX still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: 08-15-2001
Units potentially affected: 598,256
NHTSA campaign number: 01V261000
Defective part or component: VISUAL SYSTEMS:WINDSHIELD WIPER:MOTOR
Description: Vehicle Description: Mini vans. Contaminants such as water, salt, and windshield washer solution can enter the wiper motor cover assembly through pinholes on the exterior of the cover that are used in the molding process. In addition, on certain of the vehicles built between February and August 2000, a switch located in the plastic cover of the wiper motor gear case could malfunction and overheat. Either of these conditions could potentially result in loss of intermittent wiper function, loss of wiper park function, complete loss of wiper function, smoke, or ignition of the plastic cover material. Contaminant entry could also result in unintended wiper motor operation. Switch malfunction is most likely to occur when the intermittent setting of the wipers is being used, or when snow or ice obstructs the blades from returning to the ""parked"" position at the bottom of the windshield. Loss of visibility while driving increases the risk of a crash. Dealers will install a new wiper cover with improved sealing and water resistance. Owner notification begain August 27, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

NHTSA campaign number: 01V262000
Defective part or component: AIR CONDITIONER:MOTOR:FAN WIRING
Description: Vehicle Description: Mini vans equipped with auxiliary rear air-conditioning. If the auxiliary air-conditioning blower motor stops turning while in the medium-low blower speed setting, there is the potential that the resistor may become hot and smoke. The motor could potentially catch on fire. Dealers will install a jumper wire that will ensure that the medium-low blower speed setting is protected by the thermal limiter. Owner notification began Augsut 27, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 789,723
NHTSA campaign number: 99V147000
Defective part or component: BRAKES:HYDRAULIC:MASTER CYLINDER:OTHER
Description: Vehicle Description: Minivans. The brake fluid master cylinder is recessed and oriented in the engine compartment so that the brake fluid warning statement embossed on both the top of the filler cap and the side of the reservoir body are not entirely visible by direct view. These vehicles may not fully comply with requirements of FMVSS No. 135, ""Passenger Car Brake Systems."" Owners will be provided with new labels and installation instructions.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

Finally Ford's minivan gets a fourth door.
By John Rettie, NewCarTestDrive.com

Overall the Windstar is designed as the ultimate family vehicle with maximum versatility.

Ford has improved it throughout, though the previous model's only failing was the lack of a second sliding door. While adding the second door, Ford has taken the opportunity to improve safety and emissions. For example, side airbags are available as an option for the first time.

If you can afford to purchase the top-of-the-line model and add optional features such as side airbags and the reverse warning system, you end up with one of the safest, most versatile vehicles on the road. It's almost too good for the kids -- a luxuriously appointed Windstar is more appropriate for taking four to six adults on a long journey or downtown to the opera.

Overview:

The popularity of a sliding side door on the driver's side of the Chrysler minivans caught everyone by surprise. Buyers of Ford's Windstar, the closest competitor to Chrysler's trio of big minivans, have had to make do with a large optional driver's door for rear access from the driver's side.

Those days are over. The newest version of the Windstar gets a second sliding door. What's more it's available as a power-operated door. Windstar still rates best in government safety tests and it offers some new features that set it apart from other minivans.
