Safety Recalls

NHTSA Safety Recalls:
Important: The following recalls were issued for the 1998 FORD EXPEDITION by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 1998 FORD EXPEDITION still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: 09-12-2005
Units potentially affected: 3,800,000
NHTSA campaign number: 05V388000
Defective part or component: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Description: On certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles equipped with speed control, the speed control deactivation switch may overheat, smoke, or burn. A fire at the switch could occur. By letter dated September 12, 2005, owners were instructed to return their vehicles to their dealers to have the speed control deactivation switch disconnected. Owners who have had their speed control deactivated are being notified that parts will be available and advised to make an appointment to reconnect the speed control beginning in February 2006. Owners who did not have their speed control deactivated are being notified to have their system remedied beginning in February 2006. Owners are urged to avail themselves of the free disconnect service as soon as possible because of the significant risk of fire. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 866,000
NHTSA campaign number: 97V171000
Defective part or component: POWER TRAIN:TRANSMISSION:AUTOMATIC:INDICATOR:LEVER:GEAR
Description: Vehicle Description: Light duty pickup trucks and multi-purpose passenger vehicles. If the automatic transmission shift cable assembly was not fully attached to the steering column bracket, the shift cable assembly can come out of the bracket. The vehicle operator would then not be able to shift the transmission from one of the drive gear positions into the park position even though the gear shift selector would indicate ""Park."" The condition would not allow a disengagement of the transmission from the park position or affect proper neutral start switch operation. Unintended vehicle movement could occur if the parking brake was not set. Dealers will make the proper attachment of the transmission shift control cable to the steering column bracket and add a tie strap to that connection.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 1,520,000
NHTSA campaign number: 98V095000
Defective part or component: WHEELS:LUGS:NUTS:BOLTS
Description: Vehicle Description: Multi-purpose vehicles and light duty pickup trucks. The lug nuts on these vehicles may not create sufficient clamp load allowing wheel movement in relation to the hub/rotor mounting surface. This can result in the loosening of lug nuts, stud fatigue failure, and the potential for a wheel separation from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Owners of these vehicles will be receiving two notifications. The first notification, which began in May 1998, will provide an interim repair procedure until parts become available. This interim procedure can be completed by owners or their dealers. It specifies that the lug nut torque must be verified to be 100 lbs. Then the lug nuts need to be tightened an additional 1/8 to 1/4 turn more. There will be a second owner notification, which is expected to begin July 20, 1998, under which dealers will inspect the wheel studs and replace the wheel lug nuts.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

Big, handsome and hard to get.
By Ray Thursby, NewCarTestDrive.com

By any measure, the Expedition sets new standards for the large sport-utility market. Its blend of strength, refinement, comfort, good road manners and exceptional finish quality is not matched by the Suburban, at least for now. The shorter length of the Expedition is an admission ticket to a larger number of garages.

In our view, the lure of the biggest Ford is its versatility. The Expedition will haul almost anything one might put in a pickup truck, assuming the owner is willing to soil the plush carpet. It will carry a large family in limousine-like splendor, pull a trailer or explore places beyond pavement's end. For the price, you can't ask for more than that.

Overview:

Ford has touted itself as the "Better Idea" company in years past. Its biggest Better Idea to date, the massive Expedition, may well be considered a Best Idea, judging from the horde of cash-in-hand customers queuing up at Ford dealerships. Assembly plants are working full steam to meet the demand for the the Expedition, and its luxurious near-twin, the Lincoln Navigator.

Ford and Lincoln dealers are trying to get them as quickly as possible, but buyers have recently been placed on waiting lists. Enough Expeditions are now trickling into the Ford dealerships that buyers can drive one home. Those wishing to purchase a Navigator should expect to wait for awhile to get one.

Why is the Expedition so successful? We think its success goes beyond the current enthusiasm for large sport-utilities. And we think it goes beyond the shortage of contenders; only the GMC and Chevrolet Suburbans compete in this big size class. We think the Expedition is selling like hot cakes because it does everything it was designed to do and it does it well. Its good looks certainly don't hurt, either.

This year does not bring major changes to the Expedition because it is only in its second year of production. And the folks at Ford wouldn't want to change a thing. In fact, the only things setting the 1998 version apart from its predecessor are the availability of some additional paint colors. The Expedition has also been certified as a Low-Emissions Vehicle in states that have adopted California's tougher emissions regulations.
