NHTSA Safety Recalls:
Important: The following recalls were issued for the 1996 PONTIAC GRAND AM GT by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 1996 PONTIAC GRAND AM GT still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: 03-06-2002
Units potentially affected: 1,589,948
NHTSA campaign number: 02V070000
Defective part or component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
Description: On certain passenger vehicles, if the engine fails to start and the driver holds the key in the ""Start"" position for an extended period, high current flows through the ignition switch, and sometimes produces enough heat to melt internal switch parts. If the switch is damaged, a fire could occur in the steering column, even with the engine off and the key removed. Dealers will install a relay kit in these vehicles to prevent high current from flowing through the ignition switch. Owner notification began March 27, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737, Buick at 1-800-521-7300, or Oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537.
Recall date: 12-17-1996
Units potentially affected: 424
NHTSA campaign number: 96V249000
Defective part or component: STEERING:COLUMN
Description: The steering column lower pinch bolt was not properly tightened during assembly. An undertorqued pinch bolt can rattle and cause looseness in the steering system. If the pinch bolt backed out of the joint completely, rotation of the steering shaft against the connector could cause increasing looseness in the steering system and result in loss of steering and an accident. Dealers will inspect the steering column pinch bolt for correct torque and, if necessary, tighten the bolt to the specified torque.
Recall date: 12-17-1996
Units potentially affected: 270,014
NHTSA campaign number: 96V250000
Defective part or component: LIGHTING:FLASHER:HAZARD WARNING (1/84)
Description: The front and/or rear hazard warning lamps (four-way flashers) do not flash when the hazard switch is activated. This fails to comply with FMVSS No. 108, ""Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."" If these lamps were not flashing, other vehicles would not be aware that this vehicle was stopped increasing the risk of an accident. Dealers or vehicle owners will inspect for proper function of the hazard warning lamps. If necessary, dealers will replace the hazard lamp switch.
Recall date: 02-17-1998
Units potentially affected: 249,420
NHTSA campaign number: 98V027000
Defective part or component: LIGHTING:SWITCH:BUTTON:RING:COURTESY LIGHTS
Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. These vehicles were built with the potential for the interior lamps to come on unexpectedly while the vehicles are being driven. This does not meet the requirements of FMVSS No. 101, ""Controls and Displays."" The interior lamps coming on unexpectedly could startle a driver causing a momentary loss of control increasing the risk of a vehicle accident. Dealers will run a diagnostic test on the lamp control module and, if necessary, replace it.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

A sporty entry into the mid-size market.
By Mike Sante, NewCarTestDrive.com

If hard-driving performance is truly important to you, then a Ford Probe or Chrysler Sebring might be a better choice than the Grand Am.

But if you just want an affordable car with a little personality, one that will get you to and from work during the week and haul a couple of kids to the circus on Saturday, then the Grand Am is a candidate.

It's a perfectly adequate midsize car with enough attitude that you won't feel like you've surrendered to driving a bland family vehicle on your way to a minivan.

The Grand Am's aging design is no match for newer midsize models like the Accord, Stratus or Camry. But if the price is right, you could be quite happy together.

Overview:

Sporty looks. Competent performance. Competitive price. That's what made Pontiac Grand Am the seventh best-selling car in the country last year.

Pontiac has spent millions to establish itself as General Motor's high-performance "excitement" division, and the Grand Am certainly has that aggressive attitude from its fog lamps to its spoiler. Even though the basic look is more than a decade old, the Grand Am still stands out in a crowd of far more mundane looking family sedans.

You might be a little disappointed once you get a Grand Am out on the road. The car's fetching exterior promises more of an exhilarating performance than the Grand Am actually delivers. But its suspension and powertrain are perfectly acceptable and the ride is quiet and pleasant enough.

While the Grand Am may not out-perform most of the cars in its class, you can't ignore its price. This Pontiac will get around with some flair for a couple of thousand dollars less than a comparably equipped Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.

So while we suspect a lot of folks are initially smitten with the Grand Am's sporty appearance, common sense tells them to buy because its a good deal.
