NHTSA Safety Recalls:
Important: The following recalls were issued for the 1996 MERCURY MYSTIQUE GS/SPREE by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 1996 MERCURY MYSTIQUE GS/SPREE still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: 01-08-2001
Units potentially affected: 262,559
NHTSA campaign number: 00V367000
Defective part or component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM
Description: Vehicle Description: 1995 passenger vehicles equipped with the 2.0L and 2.5L engines, and 1996 vehicles equipped with 2.5L engines. Tightening of the engine cooling fan motor bearings, up to and including motor stall, can result in increased motor torque and higher than normal motor current and accompanying high motor temperatures. Overheating of the cooling fan motor due to excessive current can result in smoke and odors from bearing grease, insulation and other internal motor components. If electrical current continues to be applied to the motor, internal motor components could ignite possibly igniting other engine compartment components. Dealers will install a Positive Temperature Coefficient device in-line with each fan motor. Ford will also extend the warranty on the engine cooling fan assembly to a total of 8 years of service or 100,000 miles from the warranty start date, whichever occurs first. If the vehicle already has more than 100,000 miles, this coverage will last until July 31, 2001.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 566,979
NHTSA campaign number: 01I009000
Defective part or component: HEATER:WATER:DEFROSTER:DEFOGGER:FAN MOTOR SWITCH
Description: This is not a safety recall in accordance with the Safety Act. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. Vehicle Description: 1995-1997 Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique vehicles. The heater blower resistor could overheat causing the attached electrical connector to melt. This could create the potential for a fire. Ford will provide additional warranty coverage for the heater blower switch for 10 years from original date of sale of the vehicle or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. Dealers will install a new heater blower resistor and a new wire jumper harness free of charge.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 342,962
NHTSA campaign number: 01V230000
Defective part or component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. The rough surface of the heater blower resistor's stainless steel blades can damage the copper surface of the wiring harness connector. The damage could, over time, cause increased resistance in the connector and, due to subsequent terminal relaxation, result in an open circuit condition. The open circuit could lead to electrical arcing that could melt the connector housing material creasing the potential for a fire. Dealers will install a new heater blower resistor and a new wire jumper harness. Owner notification began August 29, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 38,000
NHTSA campaign number: 97V225000
Defective part or component: FUEL:THROTTLE LINKAGES:ACCELERATOR:FLEXIBLE
Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles equipped with the traction control option. The throttle cables were damaged during vehicle assembly leading to fraying or separation of the throttle cable. This condition could prevent the engine from returning to idle. Dealers will replace the throttle cable with a revised design that is less susceptible to bending or kinking during installation.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 22,324
NHTSA campaign number: 99V247000
Defective part or component: FUEL:FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY:PIPE:FILLER:NECK
Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. The fuel filler pipe vent hose may have less than the intended level of ozone resistance, which could result in the hose becoming brittle and cracking. A cracked hose could result in fuel leakage when the vehicle is being fueled. Dealers will install a fuel filler vent hose contacting the appropriate blend of PVC and nitrile rubber.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

European flavor and fun in a small and stylish package.
By Ray Thursby, NewCarTestDrive.com

In a vast field of market-driven and somewhat anonymous people movers, the Mystique--and its Contour sibling--stand out. Either one can transform the business of travel into a pleasurable experience for the driver while satisfying the commuter's basic needs.

Moreover, they stack up very well in the value-for-money department, whether in base or fully equipped form. Fit and finish are tops, too.

The lack of rear-seat space remains a major handicap, however. Car-poolers will do better elsewhere, although these cars are eminently suitable for families with small kids.

In every other respect the Mystique is first-rate. If your heart says "sports car" but your wallet says "economy sedan," this is the best choice among a host of excellent offerings.

Overview:

Ford's latest experiment with the "World Car" concept is in its second year now, after receiving mixed reviews and selling at a lower pace than Ford might have wished during its first season. Called Mondeo throughout much of the world, the compact sedan carries either Mercury Mystique or Ford Contour badges here.

How different is Ford's World Car from, for example, a Japanese-designed Toyota Camry that's built in the U.S out of Japanese and American-sourced parts? In concept, not very; Mystique and Contour are mainstream cars for their class, and are assembled in the U.S. (and Mexico) with components sourced from around the world.

Much the same can be said for other players on this field, from Honda's Accord to Nissan's Altima to the Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire. The Chrysler compacts, Cirrus and Dodge Stratus, have more local design and hardware content than the others, and are assembled only in the U.S.

But there are significant distinctions in execution. The biggest differences between the Ford compacts and their competitors are best described in the subjective area of "feel" Mystique and Contour have the road manners and performance of European cars, which, essentially, is what they are.

Mystique and Contour are also Ford products, which means they are assembled and finished to a standard that matches--or exceeds--that of any of their competitors. The Blue Oval company has made great strides in this area over the past few years, and the hard work shows to advantage here.
