Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 810,000
NHTSA campaign number: 00V402000
Defective part or component: SUSPENSION
Description: Vehicle Description: Sport utility vehicles. Under certain conditions, a front sway bar link can fracture. Vehicle handling could be affected, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace both the left and right front sway bar links.

NHTSA campaign number: 01X001000

Description: This is not a safety recall in accordance with the safety act. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. Ford is replacing all Firestone Wilderness AT 15, 16, and 17 inch tires mounted on Ford trucks and suvs. Ford reports tread separation can occur due to a combination of the sensitivity of the tire design to stress, aging, and manufacturing differences between plants. Ford is replacing these tires to prevent possible premature tire failure. The vehicles listed below may have been originally equipped with Firestone Wilderness AT tires or may have had Wilderness AT tires installed during the Firestone recall launched in August 2000: certain 1991 through 2002 Ford Explorers, certain 2001 through 2002 Explorer Sports and Sport Tracs, certain 1997 through 2002 Mercury Mountaineers, certain 1991 through 2001 Rangers, certain 1999 through 2001 Expeditions, certain 1991 through 1994, and 1997 model year F-series, certain 1991 through 1994 Broncos. Note: both original equipment and replacement tires are affected. Should the tread separate at highway speeds, a vehicle crash could occur, possibly resulting in personal injury or death. The replacement/reimbursement program for this campaign expired on March 31, 2002. However, customers can contact Ford at 1-877-917-3673 or go on-line to www.ford.com for possible assistance.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

The leader of the pack gets a new personality
By Jim McCraw, NewCarTestDrive.com

Going into its fourth year, the popular Explorer needed a face-lift, up-to-date safety systems, suspension work to counter its seesaw ride motions, and a better steering system. Ford has given the customer all of that and more with the 1995 version, thanks to its fresh appearance, standard ABS and dual airbags, SLA front suspension, and rack-and-pinion steering.

The 1995 Explorer's price will most likely reflect all of this added standard equipment, plus adjustments for inflation and labor/materials costs, and a healthy dollop for profits.

It'll be interesting to see how the competition - the completely new sport/utilities from GM and the V8 option from Jeep - will challenge this new Explorer. The 1995 version is yet another winner from the truck mavens at Ford.

Overview:

The Ford Explorer has, in a relative flash, gone from being merely a replacement for the Bronco II to becoming a bona-fide model leader. With more than 300,000 sales annually over the past two years, the Explorer has taken over the lead from the Chevy/GMC twins and the Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee in the market's compact sport/utility segment.

It has done so with a combination of crisp good looks, a larger cargo capacity than the competition, a long wheelbase (just under 112 in. for the 4-door) that delivers excellent ride characteristics, and a 4.0-liter V6 that offers a fine compromise between performance and fuel economy.
