Used Mitsubishi Galant: In Depth

Model Overview

The Galant has only one choice of engine, a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder that puts out 160 horsepower and is paired with a four-speed automatic. The car can be found in two trim levels, ES and SE. The base ES has basics like airconditioning, a CD player, and powered windows and door locks. The SE gives you a upgraded interior trim, a moon roof, heated leather front seats, and in later years a rear-view camera, bluetooth, and an ipod interface. Disc brakes on all four wheels became standard in 2004. The car is not turbocharged, but for the performance is more than adequate for commuting to work, picking children up at school, and running errands around town. It is also a solid family car, with the space to accommodate up to five passengers.

The Mistubish Galant got an entire makeover in 2004. The 2.4 liter engine was upgraded from 140 horsepower to 160 horsepower. Pre-2004 Galants have a smaller passenger compartment and a little less trunk space. From 2004 to 2006, the LS and GTS trims offered a more powerful but less fuel-efficient V6 that produced 230 horsepower. Within a year or two, the V6 wasn't as competitive either on the power of fuel-efficiency front. To take advantage of an improved 7-speed transmission, start your search with 2007 models. A high performance Ralliart trim arrived in 2007 when the LS was dropped. The Ralliart offers a a higher-output 3.8-liter V6 with 258 horsepower. In 2009, the GTS was dropped, leaving just three trims: the DE, ES and Ralliart. The 2009 model year was the recipient of a newly styled front and rear fascias, a new front grille covering, restyled headlamps and completely new taillights. That year, the DE trim disappeared and a Sport Edition (SE) and Sport V6 were introduced to the market.

While on the road, the vehicle's stability control feature further ensures a smooth, safe ride. Great traction is a major plus in areas with frequent bad weather and road construction.

The 2012 Mitsubishi Galant has a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. The transmission shifts smoothly, thanks in large part to the vehicle's Sportronic manual shift mode, which makes shifting gears effortless. EPA estimated fuel efficiency is 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, which makes the Galant appealing to cost-conscious consumers, including families on a budget.

Safety Ratings

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2005-2012 Galant a "Good" rating for moderate overlap front and side crash tests. Head restraints and seats received a Poor rating from 2005-2009 but in 2010 improved to Moderate.

Starting with the 2007 models, safetey features included side airbags, front and rear head curtain airbags, and front seat-mounted torso airbags.  Electronic stability control are found from 2010-2012. Antilock brakes were standard beginning with 2009 models and were optional on 2004-08 models.
