The Mercedes C-Class sedan is the more-affordable version of the celebrity favorite, the S-Class. It comes in six models: C250 Sport sedan, C250 Luxury sedan, C300 4MATIC Sport sedan, C300 4MATIC Luxury sedan, C350 Sport sedan, and C63 AMG sedan. It offers several engine and drivetrain options starting from the C250’s four-cylinder engine all the way to the C63 AMG’s 6.3L V8 engine that can get up to 451 horsepower and 443 lbs./ft. of torque. All models are available with a seven-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode. Manual transmissions are not available.
Marketed as a sophisticated, sporty, luxury sedan, all of the C-Class sedans are designed to appeal to your sense of fun and refinement. The Mbrace2, a cloud-based infotainment system, is standard on the C-class and connects you to your computer or smartphone. You can access Google Maps, Yelp!, and emergency services and it includes a trial subscriptions to the three Mbrace packages.
Though the C-Class is lower on the Mercedes rung it still comes with the German engineering you have come to love in the Mercedes-Benz line. Functions like Agility Control instantly recalibrates your shock absorbers to create the perfect sense of balance, response, and a smooth ride on most road surfaces. The sedan's storage space is adequate with 12.4 cubic feet of trunk space that makes up in depth what it might lack in width.
Just as what you would expect from a high-end sedan the C-Class comes standard with many features including: front dual one AC, speed control, remote keyless entry, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, an emergency communication system, automatic temperature control, power moonroof, illuminated entry, a garage door transmitter, AM/FM radio with CD play and MP3 decoder, steering wheel mounted audio controls, and a premium COMAND audio system with 8-speakers and wireless Bluetooth connectivity.
2014 MERCEDES-BENZ C SAFETY RATING
The C-class sedans were given ratings of “Good” for moderate overlap front tests, as well as side impact, rear crash protection, and roof strength by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and 5 out of 5 stars for Overall rating and side crash by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The C-class does not skimp on safety features. The Distronic Plus is an optional adaptive cruise control that uses radar technology to sense the traffic around you and automatically adjusts your speed or even brings you to a full stop when it senses surrounding cars slowing down. It also has a warning system that alerts you to brake if there are stopped vehicles ahead of you, even if the cruise control is not activated.
Standard safety features include brake assist, dual front, knee, occupant sensing, dual front impact, overhead, and child seat sensing airbags—that is 11 airbags total. Approach lights, traction control with electronic stability, a security system and panic alarm, ignition disable, and anti-whiplash front head restraints also come standard. All C-class sedans come standard with Mercedes’ Attention Assist system, which alerts you if it thinks you might be drowsy. It uses data primarily from your steering wheel movements to do this and can sense if you are drifting lanes or even creating jerky movements.
Optional safety features worth noting are blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and the Pre-Safe system. The Pre-Safe system tightens your seatbelts, adjusts your headrests, and is able to close windows and the sunroof if it senses an accident is about to occur.
