The Ram 1500 is a popular full-sized pickup truck with plenty of used vehicles available. Prior to 2009 the model was known as the "Dodge Ram." Currently in its fourth design generation, it is available in nine trim levels: Tradesman, Express, HFE, SLT, Big Horn, Outdoorsman, Sport, Laramie, and Laramie Longhorn.

  • The Big Horn bumps towing capacity back up with the same 10,350 lb. maximum as the Tradesman and shares both the engine type and mpg rating. It offers features like WiFi enabled entertainment system and a leather wrapped steering wheel to set it apart.
  • The Outdoorsman, a more rugged pickup in the series, shares the same mpg and towing capacity of its Tradesman and Big Horn siblings but adds to its amenities tow hooks and skid plates, on/off road tires, Active Level four-corner air suspension, and a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine.
  • The Sport is available with the a max towing capacity of 10,300 lbs., a 5.7-liter HEMI engine as well as a dual exhaust system, Uconnect entertainment system, bi-function projector headlamps, and an estimated mpg of 15 city/22 highway.
  • The Laramie also comes with HEMI engine and the same estimated mpg of the Sport but adds upgrades like heated, leather-trimmed seating, nine amplified speakers with subwoofer, a halogen bi-function projector, and 20 inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels.
  • Finally, the Laramie Longhorn offers the same engine option and mpg as the Laramie but ups the ante even more on amenities with premium leather seating and real wood accents in the interior.

Marketed as a “King of the Road,” the 1500 series is for drivers looking for a full sized pickup to help them with light duty work or to drive around town. With a competitive MSRP starting at $24,385, the 1500 series combines a tough, outdoor exterior with a roomier, car-like cabin. The fourth generation of vehicles no longer offers the Mega Cab option but does include both Crew and Quad cab options in addition to the regular cab.

The 2013 Ram 1500 underwent a makeover, adding 15 new features to the vehicle, including the addition of an 8-speed automatic transmission and Crew Cab model, electric steering, a re-engineered frame, and the remote locking RamBox option, in addition to interior and exterior redesigns. The newer models are available with both mid and long box options that allow you to choose your hauling capabilities without sacrificing the comfort of your passengers by cutting cabin size.

Standard features include air conditioning, driver and passenger door bins, speed control, AM/FM radio with 6 speakers, a trailer hitch receiver, front wheel independent suspension, delay-off lights, and fully automatic headlights. Newer options include multiple payload capacities (from 1,340 lbs. to 1,620 lbs. depending on the model), both gasoline and diesel engine options, increased exterior color options, a media hub, SiriusXM satellite radio, and the UConnect multimedia infotainment system with voice command capability. Additional storage space is available via the RamBox Cargo Management System—an optional, lockable, lighted, drainable storage unit located in the side of the bed of the truck.

Note that a good idea of what you will be hauling is instrumental in helping you choose the correct truck for your needs. Both the manufacturer and critics point out that the Dodge Ram 1500 is perfect for those looking to haul lighter, commercial and civilian loads.

I found a 1997 Dodge Ram pickup. It had high mileage but I was told it was a 1 or 2 owner and all highway miles.  When I checked on CARFAX I discovered that it, in fact, had about 10 owners and the most recent owners had kept it only a few months.
