Used BMW X5: In Depth


First released in 1999, the X5 was the initial SUV manufactured by BMW. The current BMW X5 consistently receives accolades in the consumer market and the 2014 model presents the high-end benefits common with this particular luxury SUV. To expand choice, BMW manufactured several unique trims in the X5 line including the sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive35d, and the xDrive50i.

Acceleration and agility are two features associated with the X5. The acceleration is known for being highly responsive, which is a great attribute for those interested in a performance vehicle. There are different engines to choose from as well. The base engine is the 3.0-liter TwinPower I-6 which produces 300 hp. The xDrive50i is built with a 4.4 liter TwinPower Turbo V8 engine and it generates power and performance at 445 hp. The xDrive35d comes fitted with a 3.0-liter DOHC inline 6-cylinder 24-valve that produces 255 hp. The 2013 BMW X5 comes standard with an 8-Speed automatic transmission on all the trims.

The fuel consumption on the BMW X5 xDrive50i is about 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. The sDrive35i is capable of getting 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The xDrive35i's fuel consumption is an estimated 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

The X5 is relatively easy to drive thanks to the xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system, one of the more unique features of the model. Additional perks include automatic lane change warning, and cruise control.


The safety ratings on the 2014 BMW X5 have not been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the time of publication. However, the ratings for the 2013 BMW X5 are among the best achieved by any SUV. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rating was "Good" across the board for moderate overlap front test results, side impact test results, and rear crash test results. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration delivered a 4-star overall crash-test rating for the 2013 X5.

Additional safety features include front, side, and overhead airbags, 4-wheel ABS, auto-leveling headlights, traction control, and child safety locks. Stability control is another excellent feature that enhances safety and driving quality.


  • BMW Night Vision is an available option on the BMW X5.  BMW Night Vision allows drivers to see animals and pedestrians over 900 feet ahead in the dark. Utilizing infrared technology in the vehicle's front camera, the X5 displays potential road hazards on the navigation system monitor so that drivers may be able to avoid an accident well before they are able to see it with their naked eye.
