While the name was new for 2006, the Cadillac DTS is essentially an updated and rebadged version of the Cadillac DeVille that was last sold for the 2005 model year. Four trims were typically offered, with earlier DTS models coming in base, Luxury I, Luxury II and Performance trims. The trim structure changed slightly throughout the DTS' six-year run, with the most recent models being offered in base, Luxury, Premium and Platinum trims.
The DTS launched with a 4.6-liter V8 engine that produces 275 horsepower, though a more powerful version of the same engine is available in Performance and Platinum trims, producing up to 292 horsepower. A four-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard on all models.
The DTS has 18.8 cubic feet of trunk space and seats five, or six when equipped with a front bench seat. It impresses with plenty of passenger space in both rows, though some cabin materials fall short of expectations for the class. Common standard features across all model years include the OnStar telematics system, satellite radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats and leather upholstery. Notable options include heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, navigation and a sunroof.
The DTS saw few major changes across model years, though there were a few notable additions. In particular, electronic stability control became standard on the 2008 DTS, while Bluetooth phone connectivity was included on all 2009 models.
The Cadillac DTS can be cross-shopped with a number of competitors, including the Buick LaCrosse, Hyundai Genesis, Lexus ES, Lincoln MKS and Toyota Avalon. The DTS was succeeded by the Cadillac XTS, which was first introduced as a 2013 model.
