A Car

CARFAX started with a vision: Create a one-stop source for vehicle history information for buyers and sellers of used cars. CARFAX® Vehicle History Reports™ are available on all used cars and light trucks model year 1981 or later. Using the unique 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN), a CARFAX Report is generated instantly from our database of over six billion records.

We started offering CARFAX Vehicle History Reports to the dealer market in 1986. These reports were developed from a database of just 10,000 records from the Missouri Department of Motor Vehicles and were distributed via fax.

Today, CARFAX has the most comprehensive vehicle history database available in North America and receives vehicle history information from more than 34,000 sources. Some types of information that a CARFAX Report may include are:

  • Title information, including salvaged or junked titles
  • Flood damage history
  • Total loss accident history
  • Odometer readings
  • Lemon history
  • Number of owners
  • Accident indicators, such as airbag deployments
  • State emissions inspection results
  • Service records
  • Vehicle use (taxi, rental, lease, etc.)

In 1999, CARFAX became a wholly owned subsidiary of R.L. Polk & Co., a global leader in information services.
