A Massachusetts inspection checks the following components:

  • Tail Lamps/Brake Lights/Backup Lights/Other Lighting Devices
  • Horn
  • Exhaust System
  • Tires
  • Body Panels/Fuel Tank
  • Service Brake
  • Parking/Emergency Brake
  • Seat Belts
  • Ball Joints/Steering/Suspension
  • Emissions Test/Emissions Components

Beginning Oct 1, 2008 all 1996 and newer vehicles registered in Massachusetts are required to have a safety inspection and emissions test every year. New vehicles are exempt from an emissions test during the first year on the road with the same owner, but are subject to a safety inspection and emissions test when they are sold to subsequent owners.
